Well, I knew it was bound to happen. Per suggestion of several members here after my martial arts thread, I decided to hunt down a local studio that taught Hapkido in an effort to try to refresh my skills after about 10-12 years without a mentor. Well, I found this nice kindly old oriental gentleman who refered me over to a small storefront hapkido school in a nearby city. Took me forever to find it because he's not listed in the phone book for some reason. Well, anyways, I finally found him yesterday and finally made the visit today during my afternoon client visits. I walked in, asked the young lady at the front for the owner of the studio. She called to someone in the back and a middle aged man (about in his 40's I'd say) came up to greet me. I introduced myself and told him I was looking for an instructor. He smiled, then showed me into his studio where he was doing an afternoon lesson. He introduced me to his class then had me change into my practice outfit. So I got into my outfit (which I brought just in case the instructor might want me to spar to see where I was skill wise), then came into the middle of a large sparing mat. He took two of his best students and paired them up against me.

They were both very good and I did very well against them winning both sparing matches. Then the instructor himself wanted to spar against me to further test my skills. Uh, that match didn't go so well. I may be big, strong, muscular, fast, and agile, but oh man. He kicked my *** with such ease I thought I was a brand new student again!! Saying he used me to wipe the mat with would be an understatement! Afterwords he talked to me for a while and we're going to be doing lessons every other day now. He said I did really good. I got the bruises to prove otherwise in my opinion. Wow. I think I still got a lot of learning to do. I can't believe I got my *** kicked like that. :Q

Seems a little too 'Hollywood' a story to me. You wander into a martial arts studio that's hidden somewhere, talked to a lady that gets the master. He takes you to the back, and for some reason, in the afternoon he has two of his best students there, with nothing to do so he pits you against them in a 'challenge' to test your skills. You whipped them, so then the master wants to test you. And he whips you. Now you are his student.

Congrats - nice to hear that you've returned to "our little world" ;) . Just be glad he didn't rip your arms off . . ..

On a more serious note, I've been helping my kung fu class going, and my sifu promised me a private lesson since I don't get to work out . . . :brokenheart: I'm ging to get my ass kicked - and then some :D .

Sounds like my 9 year old daughter's Hapkido instructor. He throws in advanced techniques every now and again to keep their interest. My little girl is being taught some basic sword skills. Man, I almost feel sorry for the guy that gives her crap in 10 years or so.

So hollywood steals from real life. What's new about that? The movie industry hasn't had an orginal idea since 1920.

What the hell kind of martial arts instructor would try and hurt a student? Sure not one I would want to go to.

I think this is the only country where you can take martial arts and not be subjected to pain. I know in Korea, tae kwon do was brutal and that's not even a real martial skill...it's an artform!

Hell, dancing is painful in the orient.
