Got my first speeding ticket....

Great, motorcycle cop while very friendly and apparently a graduate of berkeley, gave me a ticket for 50 in a 30mph zone... I wasn't speeding, thought it was 35MPH zone and I want to contest the ticket.

What are some things I should know and how I should fight it? I didn't admit guilt or anything like that and the office was polite despite the fact (stupid of me I guess?) when he asked him how fast I was going and I said probably 30. He said I was speeding and I replied "nope"

So yeah...

Dont contest it. Show up on the court date and they will lower it.

But I wasn't speeding?

How did he obtain your speed?

If it was with a LIDAR/RADAR, good luck trying to fight that, unless you try to get the evidence thrown out (such as outdated calibration certificate, wasn't properly trained in the use of the speed detection device, etc...).

It is he said she said, and as long as the cop shows up at your hearing you will lose. You can take a chance and contest it and hope he doesn't show up. You are probably better to bargain it down to a lower fine amount, or go to traffic school if that is an option.

Just go to traffic school,....

Hell,... you can even take traffic school online (in most states)

I did it and only took about 3 hours.

Doesn't matter what you think. If you contest it and it comes down to his word(if he doesn't have the radar record) against yours, you lose, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. Kthxbye.

Or 35 in a 30 zone, in which case the cop could've cared less.

doesn't matter. if you contest it and lose you've not only wasted your time but chances are you'll pay the full amount.

Could he have cared less?

goku?

you were going 50 in a 30mph zone, you were speeding. you cant contest it, pay the fine and learn how to drive ffs.

Always ask to physically see the radar gun. If they can't show it to you, odds our they won't be able to beat you if you contest it.

I got pulled over the other day for 82 in a 65 while it was wet out. Got out of it by being respectable and honest (literally said outright that I knew I was speeding) to the cop. Now I don't speed while in NY... and the oddest thing is ever since I stopped speeding in NY, I get home either earlier or at the same time. I must be time traveling or something.

That's what I was thinking, 50 in 35 is still 15 over....

it doesnt matter what he "thought" anyway. he could have thought it was a 60mph zone and have thought he was going 10 under. ignorance is not an excuse.

I wasn't doing 50 in the first place, thats the problem, only thing I could've possibly been doing is maybe 40, 5mph over the limit...

NEVER plead guilty to a traffic ticket, its the same as being convicted by jury (at least in NY it is). What you want to do is plead not guilty, and write the DA. Find someone you know that has some legal prowess, and have them help you pen the letter. I got a ticket completely dismissed just because I was on my way to class (76 in a 65).
