i am running p4 2.4ghz northwood @ 3.0ghz
512 ddr samsung pc3200
asus p4p 800-SE

using evga cd drivers 81.12

at 12pipelines i scored 5k @ 426/1.15 oced from 350/1.0 stock
now when i unlock to 16 pipelines i cant even oc and i get artifacts

is there a solution to this?

:/ i am happy with the performance considering my other parts are decent or close to decent 5k on 3dmark05
but kinda disapointed that i cant get 16 pipes 🙁

16 pipes doesn't seem to matter that much I've noticed. The 6800GS is very close to the 6800GT in most settings, even surpassing it (?? though this is the PCI-E version) in some, yet it is 12 pipe vs. 16 pipe 6800GT. I think if you can get a decent overclock outta it that it will be good performance for its cost. You can say the same about overclocking the 6800GT to Ultra-ish speeds, but in AGP they are just way too expensive so the 6800GS is still the best buy, unlocked or not (you can almost always get some overclock out of it).

Others have run into the issue of OC'ing after unlocking. Here is some info that may help:

Cant find the thread to link to, but there was a guy over at the Overclockers UK
forum that had the same problem with overclocking. He got around it by doing the following:

1) Disable the pipe and vertex shader unlocks and put the card back to stock.
2) Find the max overclock for your card in the usual way, then back off the clocks a bit for stability.
3) Reopen the disabled pipes and vertex shaders.

May not work for you, but it has worked for a couple of 6800le cards that I have installed, and seems to give a nice boost.

Give it a try, and good luck.
Later in the thread, the original guy posted:

Here is the deal how to OC an unlocked NU. I install the driver, Coolbits, OC it to for instance 370x900. I reboot and install Rivatuner, and unlock the pipes. Reboot. I actually have to use a reg file and copy nvstrap.sys (Rivatuner unlocker driver) manually into the sys32/drivers because the Nvstrap tab never appears on this Windows install. I figured out the correct values thru my backup Windows install.

Anyway, when you start Rivatuner again, you will see that you have 16/6 pipes and when you start the hardware monitor you´ll see that the clocks are for instance the 370x900. My 12x5 max OC was 390x900, but this way I could use it also when I unlocked the pipes to 16/6. I did run into some instability recently, it acts like an overheating issue, but the card maybe 3 degrees hotter on max. load. So I might have to up vcore with Nibitor or lower the core somewhat. One of these two should cure or reduce the instablity.

From the OP, I read it as not being able to OC after unlocking, it was not clear whether it unlocked fine at stock. Since others have run into this issue it's worth bringing up.

Hang on a minute.... how many pipes (12????) will my PCIe Leadtek 6600GT be running at stock???

Can i unlock this card to 16... if so how tricky / risky is it???

Have already got CoolBits to OC it... man these cards run hot !!!

I believe the 6600GT is a separate GPU from the one used in 6800's so it is not unlockable (doesn't have the extra quads). FTR the PCI-E 6800GS also uses a separate core that does not have the extra quad, though since its 110nm die is cooler running, folks have gotten monster OC's with 'em.
