Got my dorm room and roommate assignment

Hmm...I didn't get the dorm I want and I didn't get a roommate - I got 5. I wanted either Jefferson or Daniels (ideally, I wanted Dabney Hall) Hall but ended up with Sawyer Hall.

As for my 5 roommates...wow. I thought one is more than enough, but 5...sheesh. I'm sure it's going to be fun, but I'll probably find it very difficult to study, sleep, or just get some privacy and peace and quiet with 1 guy listening to Nirvana on his 5.1 speaker system at full volume, 1 guy watching the first 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, 2 guys getting drunk, and the last banging his girlfriend who also happens to be known as "The Screaming Banshee."

The best thing is that I have two places to go. I live 20 minutes away from UCincinnati - I can go home if I want my privacy and I can stay at my dorm when I want to get away from my parents.

Anyway, I have my roommates-to-be's name and contact info - two have AOL email addresses so I can IM them, and the other 3 I can call. Two live in Cincinnati...so they probably live 20 minutes away so I might be able to meet them before school starts. Any advices? Should I go ahead and contact them first or wait for them to call me? And what should I say to break the ice (besides the obvious like the boring questions about age or major)? And what should I expect when living with 5 other guys?

bring a few cases of brewski and a large tv and you'll be the first week god of that dorm room.

Youll more than likely have a blast. Dont worry about it. Out of 5 guys, youll probably like 3, one will be indifferent to you all, and the last will be a prick. But the rest of you will gang up on him.

I've seen it again and again, and although it varies slightly, this is the magic formula. Most people really arent that hard to deal with. As long as youre cool, it will be the greatest 4 years of your life.

What if I become the prick that everybody gang up on? :(

I'm annoyed with UC for not providing any compatibility survey like "how late do you often stay up at night to study" or something like that so they can group similiar students together...nor they did group me with people of my major, electrical engineering. I was hoping to dorm with other EE so it'll be easier to have a study group. Judging from the contact info UC gave me, at least 3 are most likely not computer geeks or at least saavy: two have AOL email addresses (an almost dead giveway for computer newbies), and one doesn't have an email address...either because he doesn't have internet access or doesn't have a computer so chances are I'm guessing he doesn't care much for comps. Their not being computer saavy is not really a bad thing, but I would like it if I get to dorm with a fellow comp geek so we have something in common.

So is living with 5 guys REALLY that fun (as opposed to having only 1 roommate)? God I hope so...but not too much fun. My parents didn't want me living on campus because they're worried they can't keep such a close tab on me anymore...and so I have to prove to them I can live on my own responsibly and maintain high grades.

Oh, and I'm pretty excited about having a stove and a fridge in my room..yay! I can't cook AT ALL but I'm sure it'll fun trying. I'm probably going to get a rice cooker and stock up on Ramen noodles since my 14 meal plan is too measly otherwise. Oh, another cool thing is that I have a good chance of getting a room with a balconey since most rooms have one. We can launch water balloons on unsuspecting peds using that big human slingshot thing. Ooh..but then again, maybe some overzealous cop might shoot us thinking we're that dude from UTexas who went atop a clock tower and started sniping people. Anyway, now I'm just rambling.

Anymore advices?

You are extremely lucky to have the quality of dorms that you have there. Most schools do not have it so nice. Have fun. :)

Are these your suitemates, or are you actually going to be sleeping in one room with 5 other guys? I'd move out.

the best thing you ever did was get a suite. you have your own bathroom and a balcony

Trust me that balcony will be fun, talking to chicks across the way

and it as a kitchen/bathroom.. id pick that over the other halls..

and isnt the library for studying?

Congrats! I would go ahead and call- might be hard with 5 roommates (gads!), but the 'ice-breaker' on the phone is also useful come the first day to move in: find out what kind of stuff they have. See who's got the TV, the stereo, a couch, whatever. Maybe you can organize all that, I dunno. I only have 1 roommate, and I usually call them up, see how their summer is going, and see what all they want to bring. I have a better TV (Toshiba 27") and home theater system (Polk Audio/Velodyne 5.1) than most people I can think of, so I mention that, and they will back down on bringing any crappy Aiwa boombox or hand-me-down 19" Quasar TV. :D You don't have to dive into their personal lives on the phone call, just ask how they're doing, where they were last semester, what they've got, when they plan on moving in, and jazz like that. You can talk about your families and favorite kinds of music once you meet face to face. Best of luck- I think you're going to have a blast. I much rather prefer the dorms (re: w/ a good roomie) over an apartment any day of the week.

Haha, saw your other post... Ramen noodles, water balloons off the balcony... dude, you're a natural! You'll be just fine. :D

Don't let others tell you otherwise- grades are priority one. You seem to have that down pat though. Making good grades in college will net you the best time of your life. You will enjoy yourself much more and have much higher self confidence and better moods. Don't skip more than a couple classes every month, IF AT ALL, or you'll be screwed. Trust me, I'm a junior and am just now figuring this out. Never underestimate the power of NOT PROCRASTINATING either! A chapter today, a chapter tomorrow- much better than the two chapters in an hour before the test.

oh yea

I lived in a suite, myself and 5 guys

Its awesome, TRUST ME. If you get 2 arseclowns or something, just treat em like garbage and they move out, then move in people you meet the first semester

Get a couple friends and find a house off-campus. Dorms are for kids who still need authority figures keeping an eye on them.

I didn't much care for the dorms, even though my roommate was a really cool guy. Too many drunken noisy idiots. I really have no idea how they got into college....

I much prefer my apartment w/ my girlfriend.
