So the suspect was high? I was just wondering, as a police officer, how you come to that conclusion? Without the ability to breathalyze for drugs, how do you determine too much is too much? Do you actually have to get a blood test to see how much illegal substance is in the suspect? Since there is no baseline study saying x amount of this drug makes it illegal to drive, do you then just fall back on the standard "Field Sobriety Test"?

Just questions I always wondered about. Drug free since '03 baby!

You might think you can drive while high, but you can't.

FYI.

Pfft. . .shows what you know. . .I'm high and drunk posting this from my iPhone while driving down Interstate 95 right now and I'm doing just fine. I don't understand why everybody else is going the wrong way though and blowing their horns at me like I'm doing something wrong.

JLee, anyone who doesn't know your occupation is going to assume that you got the DUI based on this thread title. But maybe that was intended for hilarity purposes. :)

A cop smiled and waved at me on the highway today just after I finished smoking a huge joint.

Nice work jlee, I'm glad you guys are out there.

One time, I was driving in Michigan heading back home to Ohio. Some guy was wasted and behind the wheel on I-75... swerving wildly, almost hitting other cars etc. I called the 1800 number they have for reporting a dui and stayed behind the guy (we were going the same way).... I followed him that way for 45 minutes, during which time he barely missed a couple of cars and caused another car to veer off the freeway (fortunately there was an emergency lane), still nothing.

By that time we crossed into Ohio, and I called the Ohio highway patrol. Another 15 minutes went by, and still nothing. I had to stop for gas and didn't see the guy again, but I was extremely frustrated that I made calls to both the OH and MI highway patrol, yet drove helplessly behind that idiot for an hour while he put people's lives at risk...

I realize there are other calls that are higher priority etc, but I can't understand why there would not be a trooper available for 60 miles on I-75.

Anyhow, good job getting these folks off the road!

Wouldn't calling 911 be a lot better since it sort of was an emergency on the road with the guy possibly killing people, plus the dispatcher would probably stay on the phone with you while you gave the police updates. Honestly, those 1800 seems to be full of crock.

Was that right before he ran over you with his squad car?

If I was a cop I'd pull over and search anybody who smiled and waved at me just based on principal. That's probable cause in my book.

looks like they had a blood test done. i would think that the baseline for illegal drugs is 0. anything over that is a no-no.

Lock all those fvckers up for a few years. Lock the fvckers who kill someone up for a few decades.

Drinkers will reconsider.

No, it was shortly before he pulled over some woman in a RAV4 who was passing people on the right, speeding and cutting people off. I happen to know the cop. He's a heavy drinker, actually, and spends a lot of time with his buddies at a local bar. I often swing through there for story ideas.

Bullshit...a cop is never NOT a cop...:p

That being said, I've downed several beers with our fine men and women in blue over the years.
The public employees side of my union used to represent thousands of LEO's here in NorCal. I've been to quite a few labor rallies in support of their rights to organize and in many labor negotiations for them.

jLee, what's your opinion and perhaps other fellow police officer's opinions on people buying those portable breathalyzers to use. It's obvious to tell when you're or someone is drunk, but people still run the risk of not being drunk but still over the limit. Are the ones being sold to the average joe even accurate?

what was the driver high on?

Drug recog expert said marijuana and a narcotic. I imagine we'll get more specifics when the blood results come back.

You don't have to be 'drunk' for DUI - you have to be 'impaired'. There's a significant difference, IMHO. New Hampshire's DUI law states that "impairment to any degree" is sufficient for a DUI. :)

I have no idea how accurate those are, but results from our portable (preliminary breath test) machines can't be used for us to prove 0.08+. We need to use the 'real' machine (Intoxylizer 5000) or have blood drawn.

I guess it wouldn't hurt, but I wouldn't bet on one.

my guess is he/she did a HUGE line of blow and then tried to quell the comedown with a gigantic FATTIE
