Got in on the $394 deal. Arrived about 3 days sooner than I expected.
Initial impressions:
I'm still using SVGA since I haven't gotten round to moving cards around. As a result, I expected the display to be fuzzy and/or jittery. Happily it's neither though I did swap out Dell's wimpy SVGA cable for the beefier cable from my dead CRT.
No obviously dead pixels.
A little less screen real estate compared to my 22" diamondtron but I've regained an enormous amount of desk space. And my desk no longer bows under the weight of a 90lb monitor.
One gripe: since my CRT has been flaking out, I've been using my Thinkpad T42p as my primary machine while waiting for Dell to come out with a good set of coupons. I've been waiting for 3-4 months. Problem: my Thinkpad has a much finer dot pitch than either the CRT or the 2005fpw (1400x1050 crammed into a 14.1" screen). It's going to take some time getting used to the 'chunkier' pixels on the 2005fpw. This isn't really a complaint since I'd expect most desktop LCD monitors to have this 'problem'.
All-in-all, though, it's a nice monitor so far. I'll swap out the video card and switch to DVI this weekend. We'll see how it goes.
Thist particular machine is running an old Matrox G400 and an old Linux distribution. Took a few minutes to figure out some workable modelines for 1680x1050 (haven't had to worry about manually configuring modelines for a long long time). FYI, here is my "monitor" stanza from my XF86config in case any other Linux users are having trouble getting the monitor to sync:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "2005fpw"
VendorName "Dell"
ModelName "2005fpw"
HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
ModeLine "1680x1050" 146.2 1680 1960 2136 2240 1050 1080 1086 1089 -hsync -vsync
Option "dpms"
EndSection
(I know the forum is going to destroy the formatting but the numbers are the important part).
