I tried the slocket modification trick to adapt a Tualatin to a regular slot 1 P3 mobo and Mr. Murphy came and interfered.
Seems I sheared off a surface mounted component of some kind on the slocket while taking the cover off the 370 socket
Looked like a little diode or resistor or whatever. So of course it wouldn't work at all even after going to all the trouble of modifying the cpu...
So I ordered the Slot T adapter from Stratton Computers and now I have to wait for it to arrive.
Anyway, I got to thinking so I did some searching and found a place that has converters for socket 370 fcpga -> fcpga2 (Tualatin) for a lot less money than the Stratton fcpga - fcpga2 adapter - as in only $15.90 plus shipping.
And they had a bunch of other good stuff at low prices.
Unfortunately they don't seem to have a secure shopping cart - but they do take PayPal so you can pay them securely that way.
Package2you is the place I'll report how they did with my order when I get the stuff!!!
Then I went over to Newegg and ordered a new Tualatin Celeron 1.1A for $40.00.
Now I have to decide whether it would be better to put the P3-S 1.26Ghz with 512K in the Windows 2000 server box and the Celeron 1.1A in the Win 98SE box or if it would make any difference to my seti production either way.
I have the feeling Win 2000 server would make better use of the 512k cache than Win 98SE but I really don't know for sure.
Any thoughts?
