I just received my 128 mb stick of Kingston Value Ram from outpost.com I had a little trouble installing, but now it's fine. I'm having a problem though...When I try to listen to mp3s, they skip when i open something, a lot. This didn't even happen when I had 64 mb of ram, and now with 160 it happends quite frequently...
I have a pentium II 300 mhz
150 mb ram
6 gig hd
etc.... help!

Try removing the 64 meg stick and using just the 128 meg. Or switch the 128 and 64 around.

It might be your hard-drive...the exact same thing happened to my computer earlier this week, and the great folks here helped me fix it. The problem was that somehow, my hard-drives DMA was disabled. See if your's is enabled...the problem could be as simple as that. TO do this:

-right click on My Computer
-hit properties
-Device Manager
-Disk Drives
-double click on the Generic IDE
-Settings tab
-make sure the DMA is checked...if not, check it, and your computer will reboot and everything will be beautiful again.

Try messing around in the options of your mp3 player. There are usually a bunch of setting that may need to be adjusted, such as the priority settings.

I am not too good in this field, but try removing the 64Mb. It might be that the two RAM cards are running at different speeds (in ns) and your mobo is having a hard time trying to equal them. The same thing happened on my Previous PC which was also a P2 300MHz. I have 192Mb RAM in there and I took out the two 32MB cards and the PC (with 128Mb) ram much better as the 2x 32Mb were too slow compared to the 128Mb.

Try it, its worth a go anyway!

Be sure to check your BIOS to see if it recognized the new RAM.

Try running with just 1 stick in "slot 0," then try the other one there.

Then try installing both sticks at the same time; first with one in "slot 0," and the other in "slot 1." Then reverse them.

Next try installing both sticks at the same time; first with one in "slot 1," and the other in "slot 2." Then reverse them.

Also try a stick from someone else's computer if you can.

Re-think what went on when you installed the new RAM originally. Often more than one thing (parameter) was changed (almost unknowingly).

It might be something to do with disk cache. I you're not into hacking the registry, use a program like Cacheman (see www.download.com. Fiddle around with the settings (after rtfm).

If that doesn't work, try what r2d2 sugested.

Here is a good thread about this subject. I tried this specifically and it helped (i have 384mb)

This was originally posted by: Need4Speed

-------------

There is an very simple solution for this problem....

Here is what windows does in normal mode, it uses some ram and BEFORE IT RUNS OUT OF RAM, IT STARTS USING THE SWAP FILE. This is bad because the swap is slower. What you want, is to use all the ram first, then use the swap. But how do u tell windows to use all the ram first without turning of the swap? Easy...open your system.ini file and add the follwing under the [386enh] section

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

Leave the swap file settings at auto, ie let windows take care of it. This switch will ensure that all the ram is used before using the swap...enjoy

I tried all of this, Currently I have 128 mb in there, with 1 stick in slot 0...Tried everything so far, and no luck. Memturbo says I have 69 left...while playing mp3s and stuff, sometimes its up around 80. never seen it too low, but it still runs like sh!t. Any other ideas, Please!

Um, yes! Take out your Pentium II, get a hammer and smack it one! Then put it back it and spay it with some acid. Open an upstairs windows and throw it as hard as you can.

get your credit card and go to an online shop and buy an Athlon PC

There you go cured!

Do you have the latest version of WinAmp?

I had a skipping problem with a previous version as well.

You didn't say what motherboard and chipset you have and what OS you are running.

Some chipsets with Windows can only cache 64 megs . . . and every meg above that DEGRADES performance. Just a thought.
