Got me a free Xeon P3 1Ghz 133 Slot-2 processor, but can't find the mommyboard...

I was given a free P3 Xeon 1Ghz / 133 Slot-2 cartridge processor by a company I work for... I got excited! I always loved P3 processors.

I have a nice ATi X800XT AGP video card that I want to use. I also have plenty of PC133 RAM.

But I can't seem to find a Xeon P3 mommyboard with AGP slot on the net... what's the deal here.D: Does anyone have info where I can get it? New or used, doesn't matter.

help plz

If you just want a P3 system, socket 370 CPUs and motherboards with AGP are dirt cheap.

I threw away a Gigabyte mobo + 1.3 GHz CPU combo last month since no one wanted them even at $25 shipped.

I have an Asus CUSL2-C + P3 933 MHz that I'll probably be tossing soon too, after I test them, offer them and get no takers.

Thanks for the heads up but I really want to use my Xeon processor. There seems to be quite a few Slot-2 Xeon P3 mobo's out there but they only come with PCI slots.. no AGP. Maybe I might have to stick with PCI... I do have an old stinkin' voodoo 3 PCI video card which is a freaking tank! Poor 2D desktop quality though.

I would be concerned about your x800xt even working if you found one... that was an 8x AGP card and it seemed like AGP had lot more compatibility issues than PCIe does...

Good luck and happy hunting 🙂 I threw one away about a year ago with a 667 or similar P3 in it...

Really? Why? I have an X850XT PE AGP card that works just fine...or did when I took the system apart two months ago.

Some older chipsets that only supported AGP 2X or 4X sometimes had problems with newer AGP cards based on the 8X spec.

OP: You are going to need to look for an Intel 840 chipset board. Problem is they only support RDRAM which is very expensive/difficult to find. Also while that chipset support AGP 4X these were mainly used in servers so there may not actually be a physical AGP slot.

As far as I know the 840 was the only chipset that support 133MHz FSB Xeons. There are the older 440GX and 450NX which are Xeon compatible but only up to 100MHz, they didn't support AGP either.

It may be impossible to find a board with everything you are looking for. An easier alternative would be a 440BX or 815 chipset based board. You wouldn't be able to use that CPU but you could use any P3. There are even boards with dual sockets for SMP

He would be better off putting Xeon on a shelf and show it rather than trying to find a board for it.

I have an Abit VP6 with dual 1 ghz 133 cpus and 1 gig of ram. Its a pretty fast system and makes a decent server.

Ah crap...I had forgotten that PIII was probably at best AGP 2X or 4X...I'm so used to 8X slots being backwards compatible...but of course, 2X or 4X slots wouldn't be forward compatible...🙄
Must have been a senior moment. 😛

I collect CPUs and mine came from a bunch of Dell workstations they were tossing out years ago. The machines had two slots in them and took RDRAM. (Rambus memory) They had AGP in them with Oxygen GMX workstation cards (have that too for framing hehe!). Beware that most slot two boards probably won't work with AGP 8X (1.5V cards) and your memory. That CPU is big and heavy. Looks like a VHS tape when carrying around. Of course Dell put a huge chunk of aluminum on it to passively cool it with a wind tunnel. 😀

Thanks for the input guys. You guys are totally right, I've forgotten all about the AGP #X compatibility problems. I too remember one of my Abit mobo's did not work with an AGP 8X video card many years ago.. BIOS updated made it work, IIRC. Server boards could indeed be an exception due to limited support.

I might have to go with my 3dfx Voodoo3 video card or find me an another PCI card that provides descent 2D desktop quality.

Thanks chaps
