Now I need some new software to download. Maybe a free Java development package or something. Or something where I can share files/printers between Linux and Windows. Thanks for any help.

for all ur software needs, freshmeat.net .. for java, um you few choices, you can get Sun's java, or my personal fab, Blackdown, and there are a couple more, for both the jre and sdk are free, for file sharing and printer sharing you need Samba, whcih you probably already have, check out the LDP (linuxdoc.org) for a HOWTO for samba, its pretty easy, especially if u use swat .. good luck .. enjoy linux ..

I'd recommend the Blackdown JDK 1.3.1 as well.

If you want to run on the bleeding edge, try Sun's JDK 1.4 beta3.

Btw, although Sun provides RPMs, the self-extracting .bin is easy to install.

As far as an IDE for Java, you could try emacs + a tool called JDEE (search for it on google).

If you want a full-blown visual IDE, the two cheap alternatives are JBuilder Personal or NetBeans (Sun's Forte for Java Community Edition is based on Netbeans).

If you're going to use KDE then definately get Blackdown over Sun JDK. Last I checked Konqueror only did Java through Blackdown (Sun's JDK was incompat).
