Ok, with a lot of reading (thanks JackMDS) and trial and error, I finally got my Win XP, Win 98 network set up. The 2 machine are running the above oSes and are accessing the WWW thru a Netgear router. Both have separate IPs and sharing enabled. I have one of the XP drives set up as a share, and the XP printer set up as a share. On the Win XP machine, I can see the whole network and access all the shares. I can copy and paste files to the 98 machine.
On the 98se machine, exploring Network Neighborhood shows the XP machine (the machine name/icon shows up but I can't "open" it), and I can't access the shares ? I keep getting "..Unable to access...error 31...". I 'm the admin on the XP machine, and I'm logged into the 98se machine, same name/password.
Any ideas or tips appreciated,
TIA,
Mike G
Note: I used the Win XP disk to set up the 98se machine as XP recommends, so setup "should" be OK. The 98se machine can access the www.
Finally found the one setting that I needed: I was using a blank pw for the shares, XP won't allow this by default. Had to change a setting in the Local Security Policies which only allows local login without a pw, disabled this and voila.
