Hi,

I just got a used BFG 6800 ultra oc today for an older system this system is comprised of:

TTGI 450W 14 cm super flower PSU in a p180b with 3 fans,
2 HDs,
2 ODs,
1 floppy,
2GB DDR
a64 3200+,
asus K8V SE.

I previously had an evga 6800 GS card that wouldnt send a signal to monitors but i knew moving to this would bump up the power demand. This power supply has been very good had it for 5 years and looking at the specs for it as far as rails go it should be adequate to satisfy the ultra's power draw. All of the above peripherals were binded by one molex power line from the psu and the other two molex power lines are all dedicated to the ultra. However whenever i try to load into windows xp sp3 it only gets as far as the boot screen untill i get a blue screen with error codes at the bottom reading:

0x0000009C (0x00000004, 0x80546E70, 0xB2000000, 0x00070f0F)

First time i saw this BS i just head into safe mode and realized that the drivers that were installed for the 6800GS were no longer there in device manager so i just went and got the latest drivers from nvidia and installed in safe mode. However the BS problem still happens, i tried disabling fast write but nothing either.

Aside from probably reinstalling windows im not sure what else to do, id rather avoid getting a new PS for this system.

any tips on what to do would be appreciated.

That code means that an unrecoverable hardware failure has been picked up by the processor and the system was halted. You could get the system down to the bare minimum and run some tests to see if that helps.

Make sure there is no overclocking in the BIOS that all buses are what they're meant to be. 66Mhz AGP, PCI 33Mhz, and such.

Check your temperatures while you're in the BIOS too, make sure your CPU and System is in it's operating range.

Check memory with Memtest, remove drivers (in safe mode) and reinstall them (including others that are not new to the system, like chipset and sound).

If they don't work, maybe try and reinstall Windows XP after you've backed up any data you need to keep.

Power supply could very well be the issue here, so that is a definite maybe as to what is causing this also. (most likely)

5 years is too long for a PSU, I learnt the hard way... 9800GT and a brand new 6850 have died due to it, so I would still think about replacing the PSU.

Sorry if it's not much help, there isn't much information to work with. If you can, you could also try another graphics card (if one is available).

Thanks for the reply, I bought a new antec EA650 power supply and as it turns out my old power supply is actually still good because im getting the same error anyway. That leaves the rest of the core components. I tested the dual memories with windows mem diagnostic didnt find any errors although when i changed the test settings to 3 passes the computer froze and had to do a hard reset(still doubtful of memory being culprit since this behavior is pretty much the same error when loading windows etc). If i try to load acronis bootable media it will freeze as well so its the same consistent hardware error. I removed my hds, my ods, the floppy, tried one memory at a time and different memory configurations, but i would always get the error/freeze when trying to load windows or acronis bootable media.

I want to be more certain on the memory though so is there a way to run memtest 86 on a usb flash disk? i see on their website is possible through linux but what about just preparing it on a flash disk through windows? just dont wanna go through the trouble of using floppy and cdrs if i dont have to.

Still it could be anyone or serveral of the core components that are with defects and unfortunately I dont have substitues to isolate these components for troubleshooting. The blue screen mentions of a dump for reporting what failed how do i go about getting and reading that information?

appreciate any help

There is a way, go here http://memtest.org/#downiso and download the one that says :

Download - Auto-installer for USB key (Win 9x/2k/XP/7) *NEW!*

But you must make sure your motherboard BIOS allows booting from USB, and remember the USB key will become formatted.

Make sure you change the boot sequence in the BIOS to boot from the USB device.
