I'm 17, and I've been driving for a little while now, and I was coming up to a stop sign while a big long recycling truck was parked right there, basically doing his job. It was right at the end of the stop sign, so I tried to pass him on the left and then make a left turn.

However as I was on the truck's left, the driver moved out as well, and turned before me. As he did so though, he wiped out the front right of my car, and totalled my front right bumper and part of my headlight. I heard a bunch of noise when it was happening, and really didn't feel my car being hit, so I thought it was just the loud noisy truck.

However as he made the turn he stopped, and got out. I thought he was continuing work, as my right side mirror seemed to be fine, so I figured everything else would be fine as well since the mirror pertrudes the most. But as he looked at me from outside, I could tell something was wrong. So I stopped my car, got out, looked at the right side mirror again, saw it was fine, but I looked down and :( :(

It's not totally horrible or anything, as my car still runs fine and it doesn't affect my driving or anything, but I felt like it was the end of the world and like it was some bad horrific dream (I did dream once that I got into a car accident, and it was total deja vu). So I got out, did the whole exchange of license numbers and insurance info..the guy was totallly nice, but I was just totally speechless and I still can't believe what happened.

So I really don't know what'll happen now..what'll happen to my insurance, how much would it cost to fix, and what else will come as a result of this?

1. Call your insurance and tell them the story and info right now, not tomorrow.

2. Don't admit fault to anyone

3. Take your car to your insurance adjuster asap, and get it fixed.

If its your fault, your insurance will go up at the next renewal point, and remain whatever Higher for ~~2 years.

Be more careful next time.

Thanks for the good info..

So how do they determine whose fault it is exactly? This guy is a pretty professional driver, and I'm just starting out..what happens?

It seems from your message, you tried to pass the guy but were unsuccessful. He was in the LANE before you, that would make it your fault.

did it do any damage to his truck? If so he'll probably call your insurance and such to file a claim against you.

Like it was said before, make sure you call your Ins. comp. ASAP. Let them deal with all the details of fault etc. You can usually tell who's fault it is from where the wreckage lies on the ground and the cars end up. Were the cops called? Being under 25 it might hurt ya if it's your fault as far as $ goes. At least your OK.

Golden bear...

same thing kind of happened to me when i was 17 and i've regretted it since...but just realize the most important factors which are that everyone involved are safe and not injured. These kind of mistakes happen bro...just be glad noone got hurt. I was devastated too when i crashed my car...and it felt like the world was crushing down on me. But don't worry about it dude...in the end it all doesn't matter in comparison to the rest of your life. Its just a car and in time you'll buy a new car and it all won't matter. SO don't sweat it bro. Hope you feel better!

Yep....being in an accident really feels bad, even if no one's physically hurt.

Like what the other's say, contact your insurance company.

I remember my first (and only) accident....totally freaked me out....the odd thing was that my insurance company said I was 51% at fault...

Just make sure you go to a good body shop! Some places will try to screw you over on the repairs, but you generally have the right to take you car anywhere so check with the local body shops and check around to see who does quality work.
