Got hit with a virus and have no idea what to do

Here's the deal, I'm using Network Associates Virus Scan with auto update. Yesterday, I virus was found and the scanner said the infected file was deleted. Well, today, my virus scan on-access console cannot be turned on. When I try to turn it on, I get the error, "mcshield.exe has encountered a problem" and then the scanner turns off.

So to fix this, I try running adaware (which I run every two weeks). When I goto update the defintion file, its says its 27,000 days old. WTF? Further, when I try to run the virus scanner, to scan all fixed disks, its says my virus definitions are 888 months old. So when I try to update, it shows it connecting to my college (where the item was purchased) and downloading and installing the update. However, when I update, it looks to update, but when I try to run it, it still says 888 days old. Am I fvcked?

download nod 32 from eset.com best antivirus avail.

Best and fastest for it's size/footprint.

I use NOD32 but i am this close to using Kaspersky instead. they have more frequent, and more responsive updates.
