I have almost no social skills. I've very very slow. While somebody is talking I'm still trying to understand what the person was saying a minute later. So I appear to be pretty stupid. I've kind of learned how to pick out key words in peoples sentences to try to get the gist of what they are saying. But sometimes I totally miss the point and people are like wtf. The neat thing is though, I'm am the ONLY person passing my networking class. While others are making 30%-45% on tests I'm making 80%-96%. I make A's in everything. Close friends tell me that I'm brilliant but people have to give me enough time to show it to them.

How long does it take you to type out a message like this? "Normal speed" or do you have to pause and re-read?

I read and type extremely fast. It has something to do with being able to understand sound. Everything sounds like giberish.

So does music sound the same to you or is it just noise? Things like this are extremely interesting to me because it's so hard to try to understand what is happening in another person's brain. The same thing applies to people with blurry vision. I just can't understand what people mean when they say things are "blurry" because I can't imagine what that is like. "I can see shapes" doesn't make sense to me. I mean intuitively it does but not really.

I know what you mean. I've been trying to figure myself out for years now. Yeah, music and everything is just fine. I guess it's just the part of my brain that allows me to comprehend spoken word.
The way that doctors described my problems was kind of like this..
I am unable to organize things in my head like I'm suppose to.. For instance. Instead of classifying my aunt as my aunt.. I would classify her as 'my mom's sister'. Now, take that logic and try to understand how I can remember to get from point A to point B while driving. I have learned to only be able to break things up into logical steps to remember them. I can't remember something because I want to. I have to remember stuff in a logical sequencial order. well.. no.. not like that. I don't really remember some stuff.. I just have to be able to figure out the logic behind something and 're-learn' stuff on the spot. Like.. say I'm at work at circuit city. Customers asks me if wireless n is faster than wireless g. I don't remember that it is.. I remember the specs of those technologies though. So then I break down the information that I know and 're-calculate' and provide an answer.. not out of memory.. but out of knowing the fine details. I guess that's why I do so good in school. I don't remember the key things.. I remember the details of the key things.

heh. I've spent the last 15 years trying to figure myself out. I really don't know how to describe it.

Put on someone else's glasses and you'll see blurry. It will change the focal point in your eyes. Then you can understand.

Kalmah, I feel for you. I'm sorry, but you reminded me of "Ten-Second Tom" from "50 first dates" at first, but then I remembered I shouldn't say anything. I have had 3 concussions from various sporting endeavors (mountain biking and snowboarding) and I have had alcohol poisoning once or twice. Each time I could feel my cognitive function decrease. At first it was minor, but now I find it hard to keep a train of thought for more than a few sentences and it is hard to piece together words. My vocabulary has decreased and I often find a word on the tip of my tongue for a long time and I just can't remember. I often stop mid sentence and go "what was I just talking about?" Memory is horrible. Attention span is worse. I can learn and understand any concept in lecture. People call me a genius, but I can't apply anything anymore. I can explain and tutor anyone, but when I go to solve a problem, I can't. I pull a blank. With a combination of hearing problems and a lazy eye, I know exactly how you feel. I am an extremely social person though, but I can cause many awkward conversations without noticing it.

edit: and some are probably wondering then, how do I remember the stuff I used in the examples on this post to post it.. well I don't freakin know. It's really, undescribable.

I can't remember my girfriends work schedule. She's had the same one for the last 3 years. I have to ask her every day. Why? Probably because their is no logic to follow to remember those numbers. If I knew the details of how and why schedules are done the way that they are at her work.. then I would remember those details.. and be able to 'figure out' what her schedule is. kind of.. like that.

That's actually not a bad thing. Going to engineering school, this how they try to teach you how to think. But thinking like this on a regular basis must be a real hassle.

Have you tried medicinal marijuana?

I always walk behind the car in that situation, unless I've made eye contact with the driver. I have been hit by a car before (barely) but I didn't think anything of it because I wasn't hurt.

I have almost hit someone doing the same thing before. It was a lady crossing with a stroller. After that, you're really damn careful every time you turn through a crosswalk.

I've been driving or passenger for a couple near-accidents when people were jaywalking and the drivers vision was obscured by a van or semi turning. I wonder who would be found at fault for those. Both were drunk, homeless lady and sorority girls.
