East coast already out of gasoline, midwest refineries told to start shipping trucks east.

Gas prices skyrocketing.

Probably will surpass Katrina prices.

East Coast refiners cut runs

Oil refineries in the U.S. Northeast -- home to 1.2 million barrels per day of capacity -- prepared their plants throughout the week and some scaled back operations. Pipeline operators warned of potential delays for fuel distribution ahead.

ConocoPhillips was cutting rates at its 185,000 barrel per day (bpd) Trainer, Pennsylvania, refinery, sources said on Saturday. On Friday, sources said rates had been cut by 25 percent at Sunoco's Marcus Hook refinery.

So are these operators in the refineries supposed to put themselves in harms way?

Other than normal flooding along the NJ shoreline and snakes coming out they should be able to get those Refineries up and running pretty quick.

No excuses, do your jobs.

They'll get them up when they've ensured the refinery is safe to start up, safety first. They're also union workers so you shouldn't complain about how long it takes them to get the refinery up and running.

I wonder why that the refineries that were running below capacity in the neighboring midwest areas did not increase production knowing that this storm was coming? Was it because it takes some time to fire up the extra capacity (real question: don't know the answer)?

The speculators are cranking oil up again, approaching $90 fast:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Oil-r...9.html?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=7&asset=&ccode=

Oil rises on stronger consumer spending

Oil up more than 2 percent with stronger US consumer spending

Benchmark oil rose $1.91, or 2.3 percent, to $87.28 per barrel in midday trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, used to price international varieties, increased $1.11 to $112.47 per barrel in London.

The Commerce Department said July consumer spending increased by the biggest amount in five months. Consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of the nation's economic activity.

The report is an encouraging sign about the economy despite weak demand for gasoline, PFGBest analyst Phil Flynn said.

Most refineries in the Northeast were spared significant damage from
Hurricane Irene over the weekend. New York Harbor, a major terminal for oil and gasoline imports, also escaped damage.

Looking at the charts, when we were paying $3.70 for 87 here in Ohio oil was around $100 a barrel, give or take. It was that way a couple months ago, that way back in 2008, etc... so what I want to know is why we are paying nearly the same amount for gas when oil is under $90 a barrel now. Irritating.

Last week, one station went from $3.29 to $3.75 in a matter of 48 hours. In the days leading up to that, oil was between $82 and $85 a barrel.

Another article on Chicago gas prices.

Good luck finding any stations in the city under $4.

Chicagoans Labor Under Higher Gas Prices

Oil prices are down, but gas prices in Chicago are still going up. The average price for gasoline in Chicago is $3.96 per gallon, according to the Triple A. Yet the national average is $3.61.

Gas prices in Chicago are higher than they were a week ago. That stings.

What gives in Chicago?

“I really thought prices were on their way back down. In the rest of the country, they were starting to break,” says market analyst Phil Flynn, a FOX Business Network contributor. “And here in Chicago we lost a couple of refineries.”

Flynn says that hurts when only a few make the Chicago summer blend.

Then add Hurricane Irene to the mix. Flynn says the hurricane shut down one of the biggest import terminals for oil and gas, causing a price hike.
