Going into the oil reserve now is irresponsible political rubbish. The amount is virtually irrelevant and all it does is temporarily blip prices down. I haven't seen any indication it has a lasting effect on price trends. It's really just there for a news heading so the president can pretend he can do something.

High gas is bad for the economy, but hot damn Americans are stupid, too. Anybody paying any attention at all has seen prices continually go up way faster than inflation for a decade now. Take out the spike of 2008 and prices still soar. So what vehicles are being purchased now? Still a sh*t ton of trucks and large vehicles that guzzle gas. Gas use has flattened if not gone slightly down, and many people are making potentially permanent changes to what they drive, but a lot of people keep getting squeezed because they keep doing the same thing...hoping for low gas prices, nothing more than a pipe dream.

Buy a hybrid, buy an econobox, replace the SUV with a sedan, etc.

No he doesn't. "wean U.S. off oil" You think that sounds smart? Yeah, using corn as a biofuel has been great for this country and using electric cars powered by coal is great for the environment. idiot.

Where does he mention corn ethanol or even environmental concerns in that article? He talked about diversified energy that was less dependent on a single source, an obviously smart policy to pursue.

Amazing that you can take such a completely uncontroversial policy as reducing or eliminating one of the United States' largest economic and strategic vulnerabilities as some sort of chance for a partisan rage flipout.

In the case of P&Ners these are the cars they want

10 cars you don't want during a gas crisis

$5 a gallon for regular in Los Angeles -- and drivers are predictably up in arms.

Obama opponents are blaming the president, and some are even promising to bring back $2.50 a gallon gas. Maybe they'll bring back 15-cent McDonald's hamburgers, too. It won't be long before some public servant speaks up and urges the government to open the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to spare Americans from laying out more cash for a scarce and diminishing resource.

http://autos.yahoo.com/chevrolet/suburban/2012/Meanwhile, drivers who confused themselves with Saudi princes and indulged their inner gas-guzzler when fuel was cheap are paying the price at the pump with their weighty rides. Here are some of their most notable offenders.

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

14 mpg city/21 mpg highway

Chevrolet Suburban

15 mpg city/21 mpg highway

31-gallon fuel-tank, each Suburban fill-up will run you well over $100

Ford F-150

17 mpg city/23 mpg highway

Land Rover Range Rover

12 mpg city/18 mpg highway

Jeep Grand Cherokee

13 mpg city/20 mpg highway

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

15 mpg city/23 highway

Maserati Quattroporte

11 mpg city/18 mpg highway

BMW M5

14 mpg city/22 mpg highway

Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG

12 mpg city/19 mpg highway

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

16 mpg city/20 highway

The sign at the Gulf station on Northern Boulevard in Great Neck really does say a gallon of regular will cost you $4.99.9. Unless you have a spare one-tenth of a penny lying around, for all intents and purposes, that’s a $5 gallon of gasoline — $5.09 if you use a credit card.

Props to McOwned for pointing out yet another price gouger. The other stations in the same area are at least $1.00/gal less.

Seems high for an M5. That must be the new one.

So far this year I have averaged 14.3 mpg on premium (not in an M5).

I'm looking to get back into an SUV later this year. I commute by motorcycle (45-50mpg), so I have a bit more freedom in what kind of car I want.

When gas prices were over $4/gallon a few years ago I picked up an off-lease GMC Envoy for $12K. Less than three years old, 33K miles, originally stickered for over $36K.

Oh yeah
High prices are a great time to pick up those bigger vehicles but most of the time they would have been better off to keep the SUV when you factored in the depreciation hit they took and the outrageous prices for 3 cyl Geos

That is exactly what I plan to do. We want to buy a truck and a toy hauler so we can transport our ATVs and camp. I remember how great sales were last time gas spiked.

I bought my Trailblazer in November 2008, it had been traded in by someone that wanted a smaller vehicle. It only had 10,000 miles and all warranties intact. I got it for $14,000 (half the price of new ones on the lot).

No more smart and reasonable than the man who decides to lose weight by setting his tongue on fire rather than by finding lower calorie foods. Pain can certainly change behavior, but it's hardly the smart way to do it.

You definitely didn't read the article then. Nowhere in that article does he say that we should use pain to change behavior.

Gasoline and oil prices continue to march higher

Retail gasoline on a 5-week rise to $3.74 per gallon and benchmark oil passes $110 a barrel

Over the five weeks prices have increased 37 cents per gallon or 11 percent. Prices are being driven by the price of oil. They have never been so high at this time of the year.

Wholesale gasoline futures rose 2 percent to finish at $3.35 per gallon, suggesting that retail prices will keep rising in the coming days.

Oil prices have risen 9 percent this year because global demand is high and supplies have been disrupted in South Sudan, Syria and elsewhere. There also is concern that tensions with Iran over its nuclear program could lead to further supply problems.

LOL on the supply lies

Oil is overflowing all over the place.

That's why Cushing is looking to build that pipeline to Texas as fast as they can. The river is lined with barges full of oil with no where to go because all the depot tanks are full.

lol lol lol FAIL

I was being sarcastic, using corn for methanol has taken huge amounts of food out of our exports, caused large environmental damage from fertilizers, cost a huge amount of money. It was a poor idea in the first place and then carried to extremes it did even more damage.

You do realize oil futures are for marginal oil, not the oil that is already purchased, right?

90MM BPD production, 88MM BPD, demand. Any hits to supply makes demand > supply, then we have to take money out long-term supply.

Marginal.

Cushing isn't looking to build it. TransCanada is.

What river is lined with barges full of oil? Sure isn't the McClellan-Kerr Navigational System. I was by the Port of Catoosa earlier today and the only barges I saw were grain haulers. Seeing as how that is the waterway closest to Cushing I would think your mythical oil barges would be there and along the waterway. Nope.

High gas prices cause pain. Using high gas prices to wean people off of oil when there is not currently an economically viable alternate is using pain to wean people off of oil. This is true even if you don't actually say it. Words mean things, but they don't change reality.

Keep up the great investigative work McOwned. You're saving drivers over a $1.00/gal in most cases.
