Got FIOS Installed Today

Finally got FIOS today. Getting tired of the problems with Cox cable internet, and it was costing like $150 a month for phone/tv/internet. Now with everything on Verizon its about $100 a month. Got the basic service (5 down/1 up), since I figured it would be better than Cox. (Up to 15/3+ available) Now time to summarize:

Cliffs:
1. Underground cable laid about 6 months ago
2. Placed order on 8/22
3. Verizon installation 9/5
4. Guys came at 9am (done by 1pm)
5. Speakeasy tests:
Download Speed: 5075 kbps (634.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1472 kbps (184 KB/sec transfer rate)

Very easy installation and nice all in one Modem/Router/WiFi with tons of options.

FIOS TV rocks...similar to Cox, but different ordering of channels, which makes more sense. Have all 5 ESPN's, and HBO.

yea, ok... i'll be impressed when I see 10mbit... 🙂 I'm waiting for it too, it'll be around 2015 or so by the time I get it.

Download Speed: 11502 kbps (1437.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1786 kbps (223.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Can't say I want FIOS if I'm already getting double the transfer rates.

I live in Fairfax, VA...they wired the neighborhood up awhile ago

I hate you and the rest of your kind.

Especially since you get all 5 ESPNs.

Well...I think it will be harder to decide what game to watch....or what view to watch. After watching the FSU/Miami game on ESPN 2's split screen might be too much (if that is a problem 😉)

It depends on how much you are paying for your cable.
FiOS cable is around $40-$50 per month, but the OP has the "packed" deal.
You might be one of the lucky few who have some special cable at the cost of basic cable. I heard that some places in TX had some new fiberoptics which were almost uncapped at the price of $40-$50! I bet the companies probably will stop it or have already.
Anyways FiOS is only in a few states and not in NC!!! Grrr :disgust:
I would love to have Verison offer FiOS in NC to topple this stupid time warner monopoly.

i'm getting fios here this week thursday. as soon as it comes in, i'm cancelling comcast internet. verizon doesn't offer tv over fios yet here, only dishtv and i'm pretty happy with comcast digital gold package for $70 / month for 1 year.

forgot to add

i'm getting the 15/3 as it is the basic package, $29.99 for 3 months and 39.99 after that.

cable internet is costing me $42.00 / month. so money difference isn't that big but performance will be nice.

Could you compact this into another Cliffs that has less than 3 points?

Yeah I'm tired of Time Warner. We live in a condo subdivision and the lines into our neighborhood are absolute sh!t. Not to mention I'm tired of paying $100/month for basic cable & internet, such a fvcking ripoff.

When FIOS hits my area, I'll dump my cable internet. Unfortunately, I do not see that happening in this century. 🙁

I think my parents are thinking about switching from Cablevision/OptimumOnline to FIOS. ATM, they are paying $95/month for 10/1.5 internet and Family cable. Verizon's FIOS (according to their site, not including any special deals if you have 2 or more verizon services) internet is $35/month for 10/2 and $40/month for digital FIOSTv (which has many more channels than Cablevision). The only disadvantage is the need to get the Digital to standard definition boxes, but that still keeps the cost $10/month less than what they are paying for cable.

Too bad I probably won't be around when/if they switch since I'll be off at school.

Edit: one question, do you have to use Verizon's router for the FIOS internet or can you use your own?

why is cable so much faster everywhere else too... dammit.. i'm still stuck in 3/384 land. I'm actually happy w/ downloads.. just want some more upstream to move over to VOIP.

your upload is overkill for voice over IP.
