Hi, I think ive asked somthing like this before but i aint sure, whatever it was i asked the answer resulted in me "borrowing" an ethernet card from the school and plugging it into the old pc. What now? both pc's have sockets saying "LAN" above them (looks like an enlarged phone jack) new pc has it built into mobo. I may if i can be bothered take a trip to the local comp shop but what should i be asking for?? i dont think theyd know what im on about if i asked for a "bigger phone cable thing for a lan" so whats it called and how much would it cost me??

Well, what is it you want to do ? If you just want the two to talk together, enable netbios protocal, and get a cat5 crossover cable. If you want them bother to surf the net using broadband, get a router, and 3 regular cat5 cables.

Playing games such as c&c generals//starcraft//warcraft 3 is the main reason for this if a cat5 crossover cable would allow this then ill go get that.

Yup if all you want to be able to do is network between the two machines then all you need is a CAT5 crossover cable.

Some of those require IP addresses. If you aren;t going to be on the internet, you could get the crossover cable, and hard-code the IP addresses. You will also need IPX/TPX enabled for some of those games. Since you have tcpip hardcoded, don;t add netbui.

Yay good ima go buy CAT 5 cable asap then, hopefully they wont try n con me as they seem to have done with many others (went there once before to buy a pentium 4 1.7A and they were gonna charge close to £1000 for just the processor when it was quite newish) maybe they wont go overkill on the cable like they do with other things. Thanks people.

Make sure you get a cat 5 crossover cable. A "normal" cat 5 patch cable won't work.
