My printer Canon S800 just die out after 2 years of operation. And the CS told me that my print head is the problem and worst of all, the PRINT HEAD is under consumable, its not protected by the warranty!

To replace the PRINT HEAD, it will cost me half the cost of a new PRINTER. I wonder why in the world that they OFFER EXTENDED WARRANTY when the PRINT HEAD IS NOT COVER.

For your info, Canon system uses a replacable INK Catridges. I just can't think of a logic reasoning that PRINT HEAD is consider consumables. its a vital hardware in a printer.

The technicient told me is because of wear and tear. This makes me feel like I got cheated. Paying a lot more extra for a good printer which only last 2 years which it doesn;t cover in the warranty. Make it sounds like its design to only last 2 years and forces u to buy a new printer.

anyway, coming back to the question. I am now shopping of a new printer now. I do want to print good photo quality output. That is why I choose the S800 in the first place and paid quite a lot for it (for a printer)

Unfortunately, that's a pretty well known downside to Canon and Espon printers. My current Epson is the last one I'll ever buy for that exact reason. I waste more ink cleaning the print heads than I use printing!

I am Currently preparing to not BUY a CANON PRINTER ANYMORE. But I dunno is there a better option or not.

U R RIGHT, it seems that a lot of INK is wasted on CLEANING the print head.

Hi, Kelvin: I make no claims to be an inkjet printer expert. But I can tell you that just because the particular Canon model you have died prematurely (assuming you didn't just print a zillion pages and legitimately wear it out) doesn't mean that all Canon printers are bad. Like cars, TVs, or other products, every company has its good and bad models. I was a copier/fax machine technician for nearly 7 years, working mostly on Sharp machines, and they had some models that were complete junk and some that were outstanding. I agree with you though that a print head should hardly be considered a "consumable." If I were you, I'd contact the CS rep's supervisor and confirm that, 'cuz that doesn't sound right at all.

Hewlett Packard (H-P) is known for making outstanding laser printers, but I don't know much about their ink jet products. They're probably pretty good though, or we'd have heard otherwise. You might check some sites like CNET.com and some of the computer magazine Web sites and look for some inkjet printer reviews.

Hope this helps.

How many refills/cartridges did you exhaust in these 2 years...

Looks like you got bummed with your keyboard too :(

fwiw my Epson software shows black ink is half full, but the damn thing is "printing" white sheets of paper, and now I dont know if I buy an irritatingly expensive ink cart wether the damn thing will still not work

edit: oldfart does that make HP carts more expensive than other people's?

Years ago, I had a Canon bjc600, then I got a BJC620 (print head went bad), and I tried to sweet talk Canon as a defective head. They agreed and immediately sent me a replacement (refurb) BJC-620. It was warrantied only until the end of the contract, The refurb unit died (print head) one day after the end of the warranty.

Canon features years ago, individual ink cartridges, which I prefered, but warranty sucks. I learned my lesson buying Canon.

Good luck with a new printer.

HP printers have the print head in the cartridge. New ink cartridge = new print head. Not that HP is perfect (I'll NEVER EVER buy another Epson), but they seem pretty solid. You will pay more for ink over Canon though.

At least you can replace the print head on yours. I can't on all the Epson inkjets I've owned. I don't think two years is too bad for the life of an inkjet printer.

I've had 3 inkjet printers over the years.
My first was an HP black only printer. It worked great, no issues, I eventually retired it after 4 years because I wanted color.
My second is an Epson 440 inkjet which I still use as my primary printer. It consumes ink like there is no tomorrow but I have not had a problem with it. It is 5 years old.
My third is a Canon 860i that I have had for almost a year. It prints beautiful pictures and is very cost effective when it comes to ink consumption. Much more cost effective than my HP or Epson were.
So I wouldn't crap all over Canon because of one bad printer experience. There are many people who have bought the 850, 860, 960 printers from Canon and are very happy with them. You are the first one that I've heard complaining about the 800, but I can't say I blame you based on your customer service experience. Just be aware that if you go to a HP printer, you will spend more on ink than with a Canon.

I've got both... laser is great for black print and noncolor photos, but if you want color you almost have to go with an injet.. I've used about 4 HP inkjets (current is an officejet 6110)... awesome printer and I love it.

You can ignore anything and everything I say:D

Would you rather pay $10 for a black ink cartridge (Canon) or $30 (HP)? Think about it this way, Canon will cost you $40 total for all 4 ink cart., HP will cost you $60 for the 2 (Red, Yellow and Blue are together so you need to replace the whole thing even if you run out of only 1 color). Say you go through a set every 2 months, the canon will cost you $480 over the course of 2 years, the HP will cost you $720. So what if you have to replace the printer after 2 years, It's still cheaper:D

Look, the S800 printhead has an estimated life of 15,000 pages at 6% (yeah i know a little about Canons). I believe they want $86 for it at Canon. Cheaper on E-bay.

First of all your printer was out of Warranty. Secondly we don't know what you were feeding it and how much.

At any rate you're better off with a new printer every 2 years anyway. But even if you keep the S800 you should have saved $1000s if you refilled or bought generics vs an HP.

I'll also tell you that the i series printheads are a lot tougher.

Or you could be like me and get really pissed off, and buya $1600 used printer (new=$4000) that is good for $1million pages before it dies. Ink is $400 a refill, but lasts for thousands of pages. Cost / page is less than inkjet.

Tektronix Phaser 850 Duplex.

i had a laser for awhile but i couldn't justify its $150 8000 page toner refills. i ended up giving it away.

I'll let you know when it breaks. I used to work for Tektronix, and they are built like tanks. Hardly ever needed repair. But after 10,000 pages if it cost $200, I would pay it. Only done about 8,000 so far. MTBR is about 50,000 pages I think.

I've owned only 1 printer for the past 7 years. It's an HP 660c and its been great. Good picture quality, not photo quality, but good enough. I've changed the cart's on it 1-2 times each year. Sometimes only the black, sometimes only the color, sometimes both. When it does I'm going to get an HP. Can't do better than that kind of life. Especially when it was only $150 new....

i have an hp 540 that still works. i don't really use it anymore though, but in a pinch.... the thing is over a decade old atleast i believe.

no reason to not go laser if your not serious about printing tons of color/photos. inkjets just suck at costs, they cost more for color and more for even black and white. you gotta buy nice paper or else the inkspread is worse and your text is fuzzy. and even with the best paper your black text is still sorta fuzzy and not quite as black as laser. costs for color printing don't make it worth while, better to go to professional printer for photos, probably cheaper in the end to boot. laser is the way to go for most people. companies hook people on inkjets cuz of the deceptive low initial cost and the fact that they "could" print photos... something most won't do.. esp on lower end inkjets that do a poor job anywys.

Why do people really need to print photos ?

Just send them out to Kinko's, or whatever.
