Ditto. Depending on how prepared or informed your hall director is, you very well may be kicked out of school.

im sorry but they wont kick him out of school, all of you that think that obviously have never had to deal with this

al he hd to do is go in admitto it say he was wrong and thats it, they will most likely suspend his account for a bit but thats about it

Again, i suspect this will not be a huge deal. Kicked out of school for this? Highly unlikely. People say that if the hall director is well informed he'll know what you're doing. Yes. If he's well informed he'll know that everybody in residence probably has a share up with their movies. I know a guy at a school in Canada(granted, that's in Canada where this is less frowned upon, but still) and he said that there are tons of computers on the network publically accessible with movies, just like when I was on the network back in 98. Ah, nostalgia :) Course for us it was Mp3s, because movies still sucked back then, pre-divx times.

He'll be written up and have to sign a document saying he won't do it again or he will be kicked out of the residence halls (and likely be refered to the schools disciplinary commitee).

Stop stealing and you won't have anything to worry about.

Wouldn't buying the game and claiming you were downloading a backup copy be pointless? because you're in trouble for sharing the game, not downloading it?

no he tried to download it

 Torrents force you to share, which is what he is in trouble for.

Obviously you didn't read my [edit] not email, I meant post [/edit]. Depending on the school, you can get kicked out.

Ditto. Depending on how prepared or informed your hall director is, you very well may be kicked out of school. Delete all you want. The static IP is pointed at you, and obviously they've been monitoring and logging it. I don?t like using torrents to download stuff since you?re forced to send.

I was caught as well during college, but this was a few years back before any p2p stuff. I hammered a few non-US ftp sites to download stuff and a Swiss ISP, I believe, reported me. Whelp, my account suspended, had an appointment to see the Dean of Internal Affairs. Note, this was a week prior to getting my EE BS! Fortunately the Dean was an old blind geezer that didn't have a clue about computers. I stated that I was testing my senior project and inadvertently affected some sites on the Internet. Phew, that was close. Didn?t want to waste 4 years over that.

Good luck.

I doubt they have been monitoring my connection if they received a cease and desist from an outside organization. Probably a good thing, since at one point I was doing 50GB a day in uploads on our Direct Connect hub. In retrospect, that was a bad idea.

By the way, it is almost impossible that I would get kicked out of school (or even disciplined at all) for this, the school sends out these notices to people fairly frequently and I haven't head of anyone getting any serious punishment for it.

Edit: grammar

I remember getting called into the network admin's office when I was in college for being the University's #3 uploader for one month. Basically, I got a slap on the wrist but I told him many people use my computer and Napster (the original Napster) was left on so ppl were leeching off of me. The network admin admitted to me that he also used Napster to download Beatles songs and other oldies that he just let me go. He was just having a power trip.

it depends what was on the torrent....

more than likely one should practice the line:

Welcome to Good Burger, Home of the Good Burger...Can I take your order please?

Don't ever run anything private from a place that can directly log you. A university or workplace especially.

I've maxed out my college's upload bandwidth via topgear downloads (for a few hours) and they were kind of pissed about it, but nothing happened because of it.

Makes me wonder what all the local ISP's do to monitor your downloading and sites you visit and what not... I guess I should be more paranoid.

Just say one of your friends got a hold of your computer..and that it wont happen again.

That's ALL we did with our bandwith was download MP3's, warez, games, etc. All of this was freely available via Network Neighborhood. Nobody got in trouble, no one was threatened with expulsion, and no one gave anyone a guilt trip about it. Is this really how things are at schools these days, where any activity like this will get you in deep sh!t? And does everyone pay for everything they have nowadays too? That's the impression I get, at least from reading all of the holier-than-thou posts in this thread. I guess I'm just outta the loop.

Network neighborhood is all just the local intranet, other people in the school. That doesn't even use their bandwidth, and it is not likely to be seen by the jerks that would sue the university to get to you. What the university cannot tolerate is sharing beyond the intranet, that becomes traceable to the outside world and thus the riaa will pwn the university unless the university pwnz you. Sharing files on the local network is fine. Sharing files to the internet will get your campus computing priveledges revoked, possibly permanently.

I am a student at the University of Minnesota and get my internet service from them. I have been using Azureus to download various torrent files over the past few months, along with Peerguardian. The other night I attempted to download a recently released game, but did not complete the download. It appears that the University received a cease and desist notice last night, so they cut off my internet access. I have to meet with my residence hall director (who is not technologically savvy) some time in the near future.

I know how I'm going to be lectured in this thread about how what I'm doing is illegal, wrong, unethical, kills kittens in soviet russia, etc. But does anyone have suggestions about what to tell my hall director that will get me out of this? Should I buy the game in question and claim I wanted a backup copy? Format my HD? Claim one of my roomates went on my computer? I'd like some ideas here.

1)Chances are all the know is that YOU where using Bit-Torrnet. To them they know that Bit Torrent is often assoicated with illegal activites such as downloading mp3s, games and movies. If they don't know what you where downloading they have no case. More than likely all they can really do is bitch at you.

2)Reguardless of what happens or if you get off with a slap on the wrist. It IS their network.

3)Talk around with other nerds that goto campus, more than likey you're not the only person who has gotten caought.

4)Use WASTE.

:D
