Seriously though they should toss him in jail for a bit.

The charge on the papers should just say "moron".

What a waste of taxpayer money.

How come very few people think like this?

Every time they throw a dude in jail because of something stupid that only harms himself, I have to help pay for it!

Who really gives a shit?

I would hope the charge disappears and you hear nothing about it..

The reality is that you will most likely have to show up in court to defend some trumped up charges. It was 1 gram? You'll get charged with like 9 pounds. One pipe? That's enough paraphenalia for 100 people. You were on campus? Sex offender! and the soccer moms that run our country rejoice..

Just wondering since you make it seem like if you don't want to work at wallyworld or a mcjob, you're gonna be majorly screwed with the 10th of a gram misdemeanor posession charge on your record.

Every company I've worked for high-tech, pharma, telecommunications have required background checks. These companies hire-out services that check references, perform criminal background checks, etc.

Okay then, don't waste taxpayer money.

Just cane the dude and turn him lose.

Also - it wouldn't cost so much money to jail someone if they didn't bother giving them TV and weight rooms and other bullshit. Toss them in a cell, leave them there. Give them basic nutrition. Make them do hard labor working on roads, building things for the state, etc. - turn their "waste of taxpayer money" into free labor for the state. No need to pay them anything. If they run, just shoot them. They will stop running.

We run background checks on our employees because we have certain chemicals in our plant. Something like this would raise a red flag, and might get us in trouble with the DEA. This applies to anyone who might have access to our materials, including the unloading/shipping guys, plant workers, security, maintenance, and management.

Really, if you were an employer, and you had a choice between two candidates who were equal in every aspect except that one had a possession record, which would you pick? Even if you don't care about possession, you'd still probably think "what kind of dumbfvck gets CAUGHT?"

GUARANTEED your drug arrest will come back to haunt you during that interview.

Look on the bright side- you could still be the President of the USA.

ah, so keep throwing people in jail, but them to good use?

I can halfway agree with you; but in the end, more people in jail that don't belong there will still be more expensive for everyone else.

plenty of state prisons already use prisoners for manual labor

There have been several replies in this thread...words to the effect of "I got caught with all this pot and I got off completely." Well, you got lucky; not every is so lucky. I got caught with A JOINT, didn't pay any fine nor do any community service and the damn incident is still on my record.

Hasn't kept me from obtaining employment, thankfully. But it's a PITA having to explain it.

So, why don't you try having it removed from your record?

It depends what state you're in. I don't think NY is that tough on such a small amount of weed but then again, I haven't lived in NY in almost 20 years.

Why would you punish someone just because they did something to themself? Oh my, he smoked/ate/drank something. If anything, they're minding their own business while you are not.

First thing, calm down and don't panic. Your life is not over etc.

Before you can do anything else, you need to find out what you're charged with. Do that before getting a lawyer.

After you find out the charges, google for info. See what the penalty is and try to find out what they do for first-time offenders to. The penalty is usually a range. as a first timer, your's will likely be on the lower range.

Research the process for getting your record expunged.

After you know that stuff, you're in a better position to see if you need a lawyer; and if so, you're in a better position to deal with them.

For the pot: misdemeanor, max sentence 30 days, max fine $500
For the pipe: misdemeanor, max sentence 1 years, max fine $2,500

Since it is your first offense,
Conditional release: The state allows conditional release or alternative or diversion sentencing for people facing their first prosecutions. Usually, conditional release lets a person opt for probation rather than trial. After successfully completing probation, the individual's criminal record does not reflect the charge.

Get a lawyer.

Should someone be punished for doing something illegal?

the punishment must fit the crime.
throwing someone in a cell or doing 'hard labor' for something that affects a person for a few hours.

Doesn't matter if you don't think it should or shouldn't be. The fact is that it IS.

"***** shouldn't be illegal, so I can do it!" wont' fly in court.

That's fine. That part was more a commentary on the jails in general, not as a punishment for a minor drug offense.

Hey there, speeder ;)

I have gotten a couple tickets. I have paid the fine without bitching. Haven't had any in years though.
