Not radioactive and why would one of my brothers do this!? I never felt much pain but later that day my elbow was itching and I looked at it. Two big fang marks about 3-4 mm apart, you could see where the fangs really dug in and pulled down and back. The fang wound was a good 1-2 mm thick at each puncture.

Didn't think much of it, elbow was tender to the joint/bone. Over the next day or so a golfball knot developed. Not much pain, didn't think much of it. A little swelling and redness.

8 days later I was looking at it and could swear I had tissue damage as it looked like part of my muscle was gone/flattened. I freaked out thinking flesh eating bacteria or necrosis. Off to the ER I go, NOW. Thinking the worst that I'm going to be laid up in the hospital for a month to treat the infection, there is major swelling going on suddenly.

Doc diagnoses bursitis, the rupture of your bursa sac, the fluid filled sac around your joints. Plus on day 8 I'm showing signs of an infection of the deep skin = cellulitis. That's serious shit and needs to be monitored closely. If joint/bursa sac gets infected I'm in more serious shit trouble. Doc thinks spider punctured my bursa sac on my elbow. My arm and elbow are the size of a small football at this point. Think Popeye, and I don't have Popeye forearms.

So that's my spider bite and I will never shrug one off again. I've got a golf ball sized "nipple" on my elbow from the bursitis that will take months to fully heal. The powerful antibiotic given has the cellulitis dealt with and I'm taking that shit like clockwork every 12 hours.

TLDR/PSA - if you think you got bit by a spider, go get checked out. I knew it wasn't a brown recluse because there was no immediate necrosis. My fear was MRSA or necrotizing bacteria that can occur with spider bites hence the ER trip. It was getting better and then on day 7-8 got progressively worse fast.

Best think doc said to put me at ease = "If it was flesh eating or necrotizing bacteria or brown recluse your arm would be gone by now since it's day 8"

It's a good thing you're spidey07 and not rabidbadger07.

edit: you actually saw the spider? Or did you assume it was a spider? I had similar symptoms. Took 2 doctors before I was taken care of properly. It gradually got more and more painful and football sized is fairly accurate. Diagnoses went from cellulitis (urgi-care center) with antibiotics to take, to "I'm sure it's a broken bone and their x-ray missed it" (my doctor who referred me to an orthopedic surgeon) - to orthopedic surgeon who finally realized that it was simply an infection, and and anti-biotic resistant strain of staph. The bursa was infected as well. That bastard took a needle "we'll numb it first with novocaine" and plunged it into my arm. FIVE SECONDS LATER, he was plunging a much bigger needle into my arm with stuff attached to it and sucking crap out (I couldn't watch, and I certainly didn't enjoy the pain; novocaine doesn't work in 5 seconds.) The correct antibiotics after that, and I was fine in a couple days. He pointed out that it really only takes a bump to the elbow to cause such an infection, because the skin is so thin over the bone there.

It didn't help that a guy at work got bite by a spider and had MRSA and spent a month in the hospital. I was thinking that was where I was headed. They pumped antibiotics IV for a month.

They gave my Bactrim which is pretty potent, it worked.

Never saw the spider, only the unmistakable fang marks. Really never much pain, just itching hours or day later. Could have been a snake but there was no lower jaw marks. Doc was good and noted the "golfball sized nipple" I had wasn't from the spider, that was bursitis/ruptured bursa from the feel of it alone. My outdoor chores have me sticking my elbows into 20 foot high afroditis (spelling? 20 foot high sheltering shrubs).

An infected bursa is no joke, that's a direct line to your bone and blood supply. That's why doc didn't drain it, he said he'd only be opening an avenue into the joint.

Goes with what my doc mom always told me, your skin is the best immune system you have. It's why I scrub the heck out of any wound, i just figured this was a little spider bite...what's the big deal?

Well, it's a damn puncture wound, that's the big deal.

Now you have to bite the spider so it knows who the alpha is.

Glad to hear you're on the mend.

I never would have guessed elbows were so fragile.

Doc said the Bursitis is often caused by resting your head in your hand supported by your elbow. Like this...not kidding. Over time the pressure on that elbow can rupture the bursa.

Was gonna PM but Thank You.

I was pretty freaked about the spider bite. I really thought I had flesh eating bacteria or necrosis. Which was weird because it was getting progressively better over 7 days. Getting better = good. Taking a sudden turn for the worse = bad.

Imagine suddenly seeing and believing your tissue, muscle, tendons were gone. I could see the indentations of my flesh and muscle. I freaked out. I told my wife "ER, NOW". My boy scout senses kicked in and I realized I was in trouble on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon we were enjoying.

Working on my landscaping that fucker could be anywhere. Plus I was invading his home, he had every right to bite my ass. Don't fuck with Mother Nature.

I just wish I knew where I got bit so I could burn his house to the ground with extreme prejudice.

Those fang marks were pretty righteous. He was well armed.

Fixed that for you.

Glad to see we weren't Syringered. I'm still not convinced that the giant spider that got him isn't the one that has been posting on his account all these years.

Was this spider wearing a hoodie? If so, I'm not sure why you didn't put 2 in his chest. Damn thugs.

Like I said, I was invading his home. I Don't fault him for biting me.

The moral of the story is a spider bite is no joke and I should have gotten it checked out sooner. But the injury kept getting better until day 7-8 when all hell broke loose.
