i got this super nice invitation to the national young leaders conference as a representative from Illinois. the tution is like $1500, is this even worth going? will i gain something from this? or is this one of those bootleg associations that just want your $$$?

1. How did you qualify? Did they just harvest your name as a potential sucker like most of the Who's Who books and some Honor Societies?

2. What does Google tell you about this organization? How long has it existed, are there stories about it in real newspapers, etc.?

3. What's the total bill including travel, and how will you pay for it?

4. How will it help your resume? Are you studying to be a chemical engineer, poet, or a Leader of Men?

1. "I am delighted to inform you that, because of your outsanding academic achievements, you have been nominated to represent the state of Illinois as a National Scholar at the Nationl Young Leaders Conferene -- to be held this spring in Washington, D.C."

2.Text

3. $1344

4. I'm planning on being a mechanical engineer.

That sounds exactly like the GPA-based, worthless invitations I received as an undergrad to join a second-rate Honor Society and to pay $40 a copy to read my listing in Who's Who in College Students (or something like that).

In other words, they just harvested the Dean's List or something similar from colleges and started mailing people.

that's a pretty weak result. They really do publish those $40 Who's Who books too, they just don't mean anything. The result for "Legacy of American Leadership" doesn't show much either.

I doubt it will help your resume, and from the Google results it doesn't look like a deep-rooted organization. But I could be wrong.

(edit) from Goosemaster's link it sounds like a well-run "politician camp" like a baseball camp for people who want to serve as an elected official some day. If that describes you, then it might well be a worthwhile experience.
