Got an Elements 867AS/KT-266. Can I just remove the XP1700 & drop in a XP2400?

I have a question regarding a friends CPU upgrade. He has an Elements 867AS
Motherboard with a VIA VT8366/VT8233 KT-266 chipset. He's currently running
an AMD XP 1700 and wants to upgrade to a XP 2400. Will this upgrade require
any changing of memory type or voltage? Or is it just a matter of popping one CPU
out and replacing it with another? Thanks, John

Adul: That's what I'm thinking too. It's probably just a matter of flashing the bios, but I wanted to have someone on this board confirm that before I advise my friend. I've searched the m/b website for him and I can't find any documentation specifing the CPU's that this board supports(of course!). Not being an "AMD guy", I'm a little at a loss.

I can say with 99.9% certainty that that would work. The only reason I can't say 100% is that you'll be going from the Palomino core to a T-bred. However, I can't help you figure out for sure unless you tell me the version of your board. From Element's website:

1) Look at the winbond chip located in the upper left hand corner:
2) 867ASH's winbond chip will show w83697hf on the chip's fine print.
3) 867AS's winbond chip will show w83697f on the chip's fine print.

After you tell me which one you have I can help you more.

By the way, with motherboards as cheap as tehy are now (especially with you wanting a 2400+), haven't you considered an upgrade to that? I know that they don't make too much of a difference (running on a SiS 735 chipset here), but the difference between even a KT266 and a KT266A system is significant. If I were you, I'd save roughly $80 on the proc, get a 2100+, and switch to a newer motherboard. As long as it's still a VIA chipset, you should be able to boot into your OS (but I'd still back up everything critical).

Ilmater: That's a good point, I didn't realize that (2400)was a different core. Would the core voltage be different? I will check with my friend and see if I can find out the version of his board. Also, good point about going with the slower CPU and buying a KT266A m/b. I will pitch him on that angle! Thanks!

No offense intended

Ilmater: I was thinking something like that myself!

Do those cores (Palo/T-bred) need a different voltage?

I was looking through a technical doc at AMD and I think that the 1700+ that you have is running at 1.75V, while the newer core of the 2400+ will run at 1.65V. However, as long at the board has adjustable Vcore settings, you'll be fine there. AFIAK, the board may just regulate that on its own. Let me know when you find out the version of the board and I'll tell you more.
