Got a ticket while driving a UHAUL

So about 3 months ago i was driving a UHAUL to move a bunch of stuff into my new apt.

One of my buddies who helped me carry some stuff up the stairs wanted to get a few beers, so i agreed, I couldnt take the truck back until morning so i drove it to the bar. I parked in a Handicapp spot, dont know why, Ive done it a hundred times before at this bar, and in this particular parking lot, the handicapp spots are for an adjacent building anyways, which is closed at night, so I figured it was no big deal, and cops never ticket around this lot anyways.

But I come out a few hours later and damn, got a ticket sitting there for $100 for parking in a handicapp spot.

My friend who helped me carry stuff up stairs, actually HAS a handicapp hang tag (I know, ironic isn't it?) and he says "this happens to me all the time, just get a photocopy of my hangtag, send it in with the ticket, they will throw it out"

Well since my "handicapped" friend and I are tied for the #1 worlds biggest procrastinator, we never got around to sending in the copy of the hangtag or taking care of the ticket, or whatever. we just plain forgot all about it.

The ticket said it had to be paid in 10 days, its been close to 3 months, if I figure in all the late fines that are stated on the ticket, its probably more like $150 now.

Im wondering if the exceptionally inteligent people at any of the 3 traffic bureas involved, including the even more exceptionally intelligent people at UHAUL, are going to string all this together and actually trace it back to me? Im thinking no, because, like I said, there are THREE traffic bureas involved, let me explain;
The van in question had Arizona Plates
The van was rented from, and insured by, a UHAUL in Ohio
The van was ticketed in Michigan

Any thoughts?

I say you send the $100 to me and we'll forget all about it.

Well, at this point, since it was only a parking ticket and not a moving violation, I don't think they can do much more than tow the U-HAUL if they see it on public streets.

They never had you acknowledge that you got a ticket, and although it probably isn't the most ideal or legal method, you should refuse to acknowledge there ever was a ticket. If you send in payment and admit some sort of guilt, they might already have a warrant out. (do they do that for parking tickets?)

Hahahahaha. Right. They'll just drop it all because you say you never got it. Sure.

I supposedly got a ticket ($15, nothing big) for parking on a street that requires a permit. I legitimately never received the physical ticket. The Parking Authority doesn't give a damn. They just turn it over to a collection agency when the ticket doesn't get paid. The collection agency will find out who you are eventually.

If they come looking, tell them you sent the ticket back with a copy of the HandiCap sticker, but you happen to have made a copy so you can mail it in again if they need you to. Blame it on the Post Office. :)

good question ... UHAUL has dates for which truck went to whom and I'm sure the ticket has a time/date... they can piece it together if they really wanted to. I've heard of warrants being out for unpaid tickets but I don't know how far they can go in this case.

Usually unpaid tickets result in "bench warrants" within the state in which the infraction occured. While you will not be sought out as a result of this, once the warrant has been issued, they can take you in to the station if they pull you over for another infraction. E.g. if you get pulled over for speeding, and the officer runs your license and there is a bench warrant out on you, the officer will then kindly escort you down to the police station.

Obviously this may vary from state to state.

Just keep the copy of the handicapped tag someplace safe for a few more months... I don't think anyone will come after you, anyway. U-Haul has better things to do than compile data for the parking police.

And since it's all in different states, you're more than free... I've never heard of anyone being followed for not paying an out-of-state parking ticket.

I think you're safe.....what ZV said really doesn't apply since they don't know it was you driving the UHAUL, they just know what UHAUL they pulled over....so if they really want to find out they would have to contact uhaul. And if they haven't done so already, have an excuse (the mail lost it??) if they ever do call you.

where I live, if you don't pay your parking tickets, they suspend your drivers license.

How do they even know you were driving it?

stick with your procrastination tactic and continue to ignore the whole thing

that is my recommendation, it has worked for 3 months, who says it won't work for 3 years/30 years?

I would say they'll eventually catch up with you. It may take 'em a while, but eventually they should be able to trace it all back to you...especially if you rented the U-haul in your name. Or better yet, why not send in a copy of the handicap tag like you had planned all along.

I'm still ignoring a $10 late payment fee from a parking ticket I got 3 years ago. So far so good.

heh, i found THIS THREAD and since it appears UHAUL does NOT have exceptionally intelligent people working for them (or exceptoinal business policies either from what I gather)

I could get into the details of how i got arrested on a bench warrrant of a completely DIFFERENT circumstance SINCE the aforementioned ticket, and how this may prove that they are NOT on to me (yet at least), but I will just leave it at that for now.
