Just got a ticket for not having a headlight on my bike. I's a student at Va Tech and i lived in a dorm. Resident need to park their car in this big lot about a mile away. So when i picked up my car for the weekend, i left my bike in the lot so i can ride it back to my dorm. Cop pull me over and gave me a ticket. Man, just because our football team lost 3 games doensn't mean they need to give out ticket to get $$$$$$$$$. I'm pizsedddddddddddddddddd

Jesus christ, i just called the court and they told me to pay $45 for not having a headlight on my bike. Not this is just crazy.

uhmm.... most campuses do that... to keep bikers from getting run over and stuff. Look closely in the biking rules pamphlets at your nearest police dept. and you'll see you can get pulled over for speeding and not signalling as well. It has nothing to do with football.

Since bikes have to follow the same rules as a car, you can get ticketed for not stopping at stop signs too.

It might also be a local ordanance so the campus police may not have much say in the matter. Or was it the town police who pulled you over? In any case, there are worse things than having to slap on a light on your bike.

i have yet to see a headlight on a bike. Might as well put a basket in front and some tassles at the end of each handlebar.

hahahahahahahahaha....that's pretty funny.

It's not like you did anything wrong, right? It couldn't be because you didn't something you weren't supposed to, right?

I got "officially" pulled over for that once....cop thank GOODNESS just warned me. of course, while he pulled me over, about 8 OTHER people on bikes without lights flew by as well.

i've been chased down by cops in cars, on bikes, and even once on foot. usually, i spot 'em and take off. it's kinda fun, but pisses me off because i almost always ride for fun at night

<< should i go to court for this? >>

i don't think you'd win.

it IS the stupidest law ever, but it most likely IS a law and you DID break it

not sure how you'd talk your way out of it...other than saying" this is a stupid law"

i'd be pissed though

It is not a stupid law, it's there for a reason.

People on bikes cannot be seen in the dark.

Around here they require both a headlight and a taillight.

Judge: You are charged with riding a bike with no light on it. How do you plead?
toant103: Innocent, Your Honor.
Judge: Did you have a light on your bike?
toant103: No, Your Honor.
Judge: Guilty! $45 fine, next case.

Are cops allowed to ticket you on campus? They can't at my university.

I've never been there, or know anything about it, except Michael Vick was treated like a god there even though the guy's a chump. But I hate it too!

Yeh, bikes are treated the same as cars. I've almost hit countless bikers riding in the dark with dark clothes, no reflectors, no lights. That's why the law exists. It's a nutty one for the cop to choose to enforce, but it's still sensible.

I was once at a light at a 4-way intersection, and there were 3 cops on bikes. While my light was red, 2 of the cops darted across. My light turned green and I started to go, and suddenly the 3rd cop decided to catch up with his friends and took off! I laid on my horn and he stopped and looked really pissed. I was kinda hoping he'd come after me or something....it would have been fun to report a bike cop for running a red light....

hmm,

what would you do if a cop parked his car 50 feets in from of you, then walk up to you?
Would you give a copy your name if he pulled you over on the highway? This is a full uniform officer with his police car.

So no, i'm not dumb to give him my real name. He asked for my driver license. This ticket is exactly like a traffic ticket

I'm gonna have to side with the law here. It's dumb that we have to have a law like this but having a light on a bike is really a good idea, like protecting the soft, vulnerable mass of cells we call a brain is a good idea when you're riding a bike.

I remember one time, my older brother got caught driving without his license. He went to court and the judge asked to see his license, told him to remember to carry the damn thing next time and threw the case out. He just got slapped with a $10 processing fee and he's gone.

Buy a bike light for your bike anyway and maybe look into getting the thing thrown out on account of you've learned your lesson and bought a damn light. GL with the whole thing...

They never bother me, but I have a red blinkie light on the back of my bike. Assuming you're riding on lit city streets, that's much more important anyway.
