Got a speeding ticket...but its not in the system

Hey.

I was hoping maybe someone could provide some information on how the speeding ticket process works.

I got my first speeding ticket about 3 weeks ago. I tried to access the online system to pay my ticket, but it says my ticket number is invalid. I also called the traffic court where they handle this, and the lady says my ticket is not yet in their system and that perhaps I should wait a bit because the officer may not have handed in the ticket yet.

So my question is...does it take an officer 3 weeks to hand in the ticket? It is about 2 weeks until the end of the month. It is listed on the ticket that I have 2 weeks and 3 days to pay my ticket. Do officers usually wait until the end of the month to hand in their tickets and put it into the system? Or maybe I got lucky and the officer lost my ticket!? If they still dont get my ticket AFTER the date which is listed on my ticket (the last day for me to pay my ticket)...does that mean I do not have to pay the ticket and the system basically forgot about my ticket?

Sorry if I sound like a criminal trying to avoid this, but this is my first ticket ever and I can truly say that I learned my lesson, regardless of whether I have to pay or not.

Thanks.

All of the tickets I've gotten have been in the system within 3 days at the most. Most within 1 day.

Yep, pretty much.

This exact same thing happened to me. I got a ticket.. went to deal with it, and they couldn't find my ticket in the system. Told me to come back on a certain date.

It still wasn't in the system at that point, so it was dismissed by the clerk, didn't even have to see a judge or anything.

The only time I ever got a ticket was about two months ago.

My friend's dad is a successful attorney in the area and got me out of it.

There has to be a deadline on when it needs to be submitted, I would imagine.

3 weeks? You're golden.

Damm, I wish. I got a ticket right after moving to Kahleeforneeya. (Stupid 3rd lane law in a truck.) I tried to pay the ticket every week for almost 90 days...no record of the ticket.

I figured when they finally found it, they''d let me know...One day in the mail was a notice from the court...they had issued a bench warrant for failure to appear.

I went to court with written proof from the clerk that I had attempted to deal with it within the alloted time, and the judge dismissed the warrant and offered me traffic school for the ticket...

Same thing happened to me when I got a ticket in Mississippi on the way to Alabama. I had actually lost my ticket and was calling around to the two counties that I thought I got my ticket in. It wasn't in the system until almost two days before my court date.

Cops will just sit on them sometimes. Can't really explain it other than that.

Are you just bitter that he got around the ticket? If he made a more useless post like about tickets being alternator sized would you have reacted the same way?

You have to pay within two weeks and three days after the ticket has been entered into the system.

Thanks for your quick replies.I dont mind useless posts...but whatever.

I guess I will just keep my fingers crossed. Of course, I would phone in on the day of the deadline to check up on my ticket just to make sure. I will also call the office to try to get a verbal agreement that I can infact ignore the ticket, incase the ticket shows up after my deadline or something. Of course for legal reasons I will record this call for legal reasons, just incase anything happens.

Best bet is to show up on your court date. If your case is lost then you'll be golden.

Don't expect everything to be handed to you on a sliver platter online. Show up for your court date or be dealt a warrant.

I had a lawyer friend explain to me how speeding tickets work. They legally can not enforce most of the speeding tickets written, because in order to enforce a specific speed limit there are multiple "tests" (for lack of a better word) that have to be done on a regular basis and the city/county/state never keeps up to date on those tests. The prosecutor knows he doesn't have the evidence needed so its a losing case, if a lawyer decides to fight the charge.

Jack, try going to court with that argument...let us know how it comes out for ya...

OP, I don't know where you are at, but often, the cop writes a ticket, it gets turned in to his precinct, they send it to the county courts where it gets entered, and in much of Kahleeforneeya is also sent to an outside agency who actually mails you the notice with court date, bail (fine) amount, and the necessary contact information. This process can take a couple of weeks...

It won't work for me I'm not a lawyer and do not know all the "tests". I do know there are a few books out there, but I do not claim to know all the ins and outs.

Edit- If you google "beating a speeding ticket" there seems to be main different sites with information similar to that given to me by my friend (the lawyer). Most of it has to do with calibration of the radar gun and training of the officer on using the gun. Both most be tested and trained on a regular basis but are not. This gives you an "easy" defense if you take the ticket to trial. The other thing I remember my friend telling me about is speed limits must be checked on a regular basis as well and most often they are not. This also gives you another "easy" defense if you go to trial.

Again I do not claim to know everything and I have not tried any of these techniques myself. They are just information I was given by a lawyer friend and information I found on the internet.

For my speeding ticket from Jan, it took them obout 2 months before it showed up in the system. It wasnt even in the system by my court date so the clerk told me to keep checking to see if it turns up. I eventually got the courtesy notice a week or 2 after that. Sucked because they didnt give me a court date so i had to call and get one from them.

A quick 85% percentile will crush your "test" theory. Google that. Although most cops dont use it.

Btw, I happen to be a certified Radar/Lidar instructor.
