My first foray into the world of copper heatsinks.

Only after I return home did I find out I received a SLK-700 instead of a SK-7. :Q Been reading some of the threads around here, and most seem to favor the SK-7 because it can hold 80mm fans. My question is, should I return the SLK-700/60mm fan for a SK-7/80mm fan? (sk7 and slk700 were priced the same)

Or should I just go for the SLK-800?

I'm running Barton 2500+, shooting for 3200+ on NF7-S v2.0.

The 60mm fan is a Sunon Magnetic Levitation System (whatever the hell that means!), rated 5200RPM, 26.2CFM, 38dBa. That's kinda loud ain't it?

Anyway, need some suggestions, I'll be going back to the shop first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks!

I'd get the SK-7, it's half the price of the SLK800 and performs only marginally worse in real-world tests. It's a great price/performance heatsink!:)

Thanks Rich, that's what I was thinking too. I don't remember how much the 800 went for, but if it's not a lot more, I may think about it. And I'd take your 80mm fan over my 60mm any day - higher CFM AND only 25db!

Yeah but it's a terrible fan if you want to overclock, I think i'm going to go for a YS-TECH which is 47CFM @ 34dba, seems lie a good noise/performance ratio to me. :)

I would say spend the money & go for the SLK-900, and pair it with an 80mm fan. Better heatsink + good airflow = guaranteed stable at 3200+ speed and quite possibly beyond that. That's what I'm using for my 2500+ OC right now and it's running quite cool at 2200 MHz (3200+). I've been running Prime95's torture test for a few hours now and it's sitting at 47.5C.

Get the sk-7 if they have it. It's discontinued at a lot of the online stores :(

Anyway looks like the SK-7 it is! Thanks guys, I'm going out shortly to do the exchange. Should have it later this afternoon.

The SLK-900A is only $42 at Newegg, which is where I got it. So in relative terms, yeah it's twice the price of the SK-7, but it'll give you a lot more OC'ing headroom. And it should have no problem fitting on your board; the fins, while longer, are curved at the bottom to make room for any nearby capacitors.

Make sure you use the sticky feet that come with it though because the narrow base of the heatsink rests *inside* of the Athlon's spacer feet. Same goes for the SLK-800 as well.

I've got the SLK-700, with the 74mm TMD fan, and it works great on my 3000+ at 11.5x200fsb.

And it can be modded to take 90mm fans!:D

Well guys, I couldn't get the SK7! I went back to the store today.. the guy gave me a whole spiel about the SLK-700 having better cooling properties than SK7 (which may be true?)... and a bunch of other crap. i dont think he really listened to me. :frown: I kept asking him "do you have the sk7 in stock" and he never gave me a direct answer! I guess bootoo was right to say that its been discontinued at a lot of stores. The dude even tried to sell me a SLK-900a, heh heh. But I didn't bite. Too $$$

Anyway, I came back home with the same slk700/60mm fan, took off the amd stock heatsink and brushed off that gray goo. Applied Arctic Silver Ceramique. Not certain if I put the wire frame on correctly to hold the fan, but it hasn't fallen off so far! ;)

I must say, this SLK-700 is amazing!!! Granted I'm comparing it to a stock AMD fan/hs combo, but so far I have it clocked at 200x11, and my temps have dropped more than 10C. Running 40C idle and gonna run some Prime95 to see if it can last overnight.
