Very nice! What was the damage?

Not cheap. But then again its also about 20x24.

Heres the webpage of the artist that did it. Highly recommend her. A pleasure to work with, and I can't wait to get the piece later this week 🙂

What is the backing material? Meaning, what gives it rigidity?

probably concrete

The artist has a special backboard that she uses. I think its made of stone. She glues on the tile then grouts the tiles to give them added strength.

I have some in progress pics if people want to see them.

Nice, I wanted one of the students in my college to make something like a mosiac for me. I'm more of a Greek person myself, but I do love the Roman culture too.

pfft, i did that with the scipii

and i beat the game with the britons

and the seleucids (egypt isn't all that hard to beat when they don't have any armies... bribery is far too powerful in that game)

and the greeks

I hate to be a downer, but didn't the romans not have maps in the modern sense?

In any case, for something that looks really cool.

Pfft, you're still playing the Vanilla version.

Rome: Total War with the Rome: Total Realism mod is 10x better. I wouldn't even consider playing vanilla now.
