Is it possible for you to cash a check issued by an US bank at a Canadian bank? I probably could find the answer by calling my bank, but thought I would give it a try here first because I know I will be put on hold for hours end before I get to speak to a real live person.

they will probably charge $$$ service charge but most likely yes. Get the guy in the US to send a Money Order.

Cheers,
Aquaman

Assuming I bring the check to my bank, the answer is yes I could cash it. The reality is they would probably hold it until it clears first.

Ok, cool. I just wanted to make sure. I am actually the one sending the check to someone in Canada. I just want to make sure he is able to cash the check. Thanks for the answers.

Absolutely. I write an American check every month to myself and deposit it in my Canadian account. The only difference is that the Canadian bank will put a long hold on it. Mine suggested three weeks or longer.

Since my credit is so good and I write one every month, I have been able to get them to put no hold on the check. However, if you are buying something from someone and they will hold the item until the check clears, you could be waiting a long time.

Yup you can cash it. Service charge depends on the bank. Also, they will freeze the funds for a long time if it's a personal cheque...like a month..but not if it's a business cheque.
