Got a question about motherboards....

Alrighty, I need some help. I am setting up a new computer, and buying the parts. So far I am going with a Athlon 1.4ghz, 256megs of ram (PC 2400), Geforce 3, Sound Blaster Live, Maxtor HD, motherboard still up in the air...
Now here is my question, I want a nice motherboard, but I can not seem to find one that supports pc 2400 ram. Also I have read that PC 2400 is superior than PC 2100 (I hope so just based on the # :_) I just want to make sure that is true. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that the difference between pc2400 and pc2100 DDR is the same as a 150mhz FSB (SDRAM) versus a 133mhz FSB (SDRAM).

So with that said most motherboards do not officially support the 150mhz FSB.... but that does not mean that most of the motherboards can't do those speeds. likewise a lot of pc2100 DDR can easily overclock to pc2400.... Just like pc150 sdram isn't officially a speed, neither is pc2400 DDR....

correct me if I am wrong though...

yep, PC2400 isn't an official standard. If you don't plan on overclocking your FSB too much (which you don't have to do when overclocking an Athlon), I'd save the money and get PC2100 from Crucial. Running PC2400 at 133mhz won't change anything...

edit-- Forgot you were asking for a mobo. 🙂

I'd get an Epox 8K7A right now, or an MSI K7Master...

All hail MahlerGMU! Congrats on your first post and welcome to the AT Forums! You're in the right place for help; I learned here...everyone does.

Dew042 hit it right on the head; couldn't have said it any better myself. However, I (We) don't know how "well-versed" in computer hardware you are. PC133/PC150 might be Greek to you. Is it? PC2400 memory is just PC2100 memory that has been tested and certified to run at a higher speed. This means overclocking, which isn't something that someone new to the DIY PC world should be worrying about. Trust me; it's hard enough getting a first rig up and running and working out the bugs to begin with!

I'd get some good PC2100 memory from Crucial.com They sell Micron-brand memory, which is one of the best kinds you can buy at any price.

I'm not well-versed in DDR (Double Data Rate) motherboards...I'll defer to others for a recommendation.

Just remember; no matter what probs you may run into building/tweaking your new rig, there's a 99.9% chance that someone here has been there, done that and will help you. Welcome to the AT forums! (Warm fuzzies for everyone...yeahhhhhhh.) 🙂

ahhh... yeah good call michaelD....

let us know if you don't know what we are talking about. i like to help.

If you do decide to go with the 2400, check out Compuwiz 's site HERE. He is one of our regulars and caters to us O/Cers. I have gotten ram from him before and it goes as far as you can push it.

Thanks for the help. The 133 and 150 is not greek to me 😛, but I am far from some kind of computer genious. Sorry for taking so long to reply. I ordered today an went with the 2100 from crucial.
As for my motherboard I went with the Asus A7A266 AMD Socket A 200/266MHz DDR No Audio. Again thanks for all the help.
Ill be back soon no doubt :0
Thanks again
