Got a question about DirectX 10 games

If you run Vista and DirectX 10, will you get any advantage over using directx 9? Take Crysis for example, assuming you have a directx 9 card, will there be any advantage to using 10?

Yes, there will be an improvement. DX10 allows for a much larger amount of efficiency and scalability over DX9. Vista, on the other hand... is the resource hogging side of DX10.

OK, thanks...I know that games run slower in Vista for DX9 games, didn't know if it would be any better for DX10 onn a DX9 card.

I'm running Vista right now, which is why I'm curious.

Dx9 games only run slower in Vista due to immature drivers, and even those are generally caught up with latest Beta drivers (at least for ATI cards).

You will not be able to run pure Dx10 games on a Dx9 card, ever. The same was true with every previous version of Dx and associated hardware. Most games have fallback modes for older DirectX hardware and DirectX 10 games will have a fallback path for Dx9 hardware for at least a year or two.

theoretically

i am going to adopt a "wait and see" approach before i rush out to buy Vista and a Dx10 card

... the *bugs* in a new OS plus the *bugs* in a new game may well outweigh ANY theoretical advantages over *proven* DX9 and XP

I'll be dual-booting with XP and Vista 64 for at least another year most likely. I get myself using Vista and I'll be good for a day or two until I run into something that I can't quite get working yet and then it's back to XP.

Lol, I'm the other way round. Decided not to upgrade to Vista for a couple of years, until I need to run something (ok maybe want's a better word, ie that new super-cool racing game) that XP and DX9 won't handle.

I even confirmed this with my wallet, and ordered an Audigy 2 off eBay, which as far as I know is unsupported (with 3D audio / EAX etc) in Vista.
