Got a PS3. Aside from games and movies, what else can it do?

I've heard of people hacking their PS3s with Linux and other software, but am having trouble finding a comprehensive list of "stuff" the PS3 is capable of, and guides to do it.

Can it run homebrew? Emulators? Media center software? Is it possible to stream movies from my PC to it using the built in Wi-Fi connection? What else can it do? Any tips for a noob?

Homebrew? Not really. You can do some Cell programming in Linux, but the GPU is locked away.

Emulators? Again, in Linux, but without the help of the GPU.

There is some capability to stream movies to the PS3. This is an old post, so slightly out of date, but mostly correct:

Wow, the 360 pretty much has PS3 beat on the streaming (Media Center extender FTW) and online deal (for now). PS3 can't be beat on the HD blu ray stuff - well I guess you can download HD movies from Live. Man, you just know MSFT would be putting in a Blu Ray drive yesterday if they didn't have to give piles of money to Sony for the privilege. Had HD DVD took off instead of the PS3 we'd all be talking about what a failure the PS3 is.

The PS3 uses standard laptop SATA drives, Sony even tells you how to do a drive swap, and it does not void your warranty.

So if you don't want to mess with streaming you can spend $80 at newegg and put in a 320 GB drive for all of your media.

How so? TVersity is pretty easy to set up and use, and integrates seamlessly into the XMB on the PS3.

It's not nearly as nice for streaming live TV, though. And you can use TVersity on the 360, too.

I dumped a large portion of my old DVD movies on to my PC and use that to stream my movie library to my PS3.

Works great too!

Edit: Oh yeah, and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it over wireless. Mine streams very nicely over 802.11G.

BTW, anyone having any issues with the 2.50FW?
