Got a problem with running 3d games

Hey all,

I'm having some real problems getting 3d games to work with my upgraded system.

My Rig as it currently stands is as follows.

AMD T-Bird 1.4
256mb 2100 DDR
WD 80gb JB
IBM Deskstar 40gb
Albatron GF4-Ti4200 Turbo 128mb
Epox 8kt7a+
SB Live
2 NIC cards
XP SP1

I used to have a GeForce 2 GTS in my system until recently when I added the Albatron card and the WD hard drive. I still had the same problems before even after installing the new card. The problem is that the games get up and running and either lock up, restart the computer or flash straight back to desktop.

I thought the problem must be with the GTS card so I bought the new Albatron one, did a fresh install of windows and the problems keep arising.

Anyone have any ideas? I have the latest nvidia 40.72, via 4 in 1 and AMD drivers installed.

Should I flash the BIOS?, maybe someone has a similar set up to mine and could give me some advice.

Any help appreciated, its getting deperate!

Some people have better luck not installing service pack 1 but I'm not sure what else to tell you.

Edit: You did completely uninstall everything for that old video card correct?

Nah I havent tried different memory as yet, ill do that soon though, im going to flash the bios and see if there are any new settings in there that might help.

CPU temps are 45 degrees last time i checked.

The reason I asked was I had the same problem with crashing all the time on my XP1700 system. It was the memory or so it seemed. After I replaced the memory it worked for a couple of weeks then started doing it again. When I build my sons computer I tried his cpu in my pc and all was well. RMA'd the CPU and system has been running fine ever since (AMD appologized for the fact that they couldn't send me a retail CPU since they did have any and gave me a XP1800 in it's place). My CPU temps were showing 45 idle and 51 at load with MBM 5.

What PSU are you using? Also try some Bios tweaks like disable all video shadowing ,disable video ram cacheable, disable system bios cacheable, set AGP size to 64mb or 128mb.Keep PCI slot 1 empty as well. You could try running the video card on a bare system and see if that improves stability then add the other cards one at a time.

I'm having a similar problem. I can play 3d games for about 30 mins before the computer just hangs, repeating part of the last sound played. I think it might be a power problem, since when I upgraded video cards (From GeForce 2 MX to GeForce 3 TI500) the power supplied was too dirty, so I had to get a new one (Went from Generic 400 watt to a 300 watt Antec). The problem of system crashing to Bluescreen went away for a while, but now I get this.

My specs:
AMD T-Bird 1.33
768mb 133 SD Ram
ECS K7S5A
GeForce 3 Ti500
SB Live
XP Sp1

Yeah, ive tried all those BIOS tweaks but nothing seems to change.

I'll try to isolate the problem, I think it could be either power or memory, the PSU is 300 watt. Probably a bit too small.

I'll keep trying tho.

Is there a program out there that will show how much power is being used and how much is being provided? Perhaps that would help determine if the PSU is the problem

I was just going to say that you should look at the psu. It's getting more important to have a good psu now than in the old pentium/k6 days. If it's 300watt, it might be good enough, or it might just be getting old and ready to die. I had problems with my psu and it started affecting all my components until the psu died (and I had a brand new 430watt Antec).
