My friend has roadrunner, unfortunately roadrunner people are dumber than bricks and they can't tell that the problem with my friends computer is not a software problem, it's a hardware problem. As you can tell I've figured out what the problem is but I can't seem to fix it. The computer doesnt' recognize the network card, the network card is in the machine nice and secure... but there are no lights on the NIC flashing or even on for that matter. There are no errors in device manager like the famous Question mark or Exclamation points notifying us of driver errors or hardware errors, they just reformatted the drive and can't get the network card to be recognized... what do i do?

get a new network card or try a different ISA or PCI slot. If all esle fails, then it is the card itself.

of course this is my friends computer and she knows zip about computers so she's probably telling me the wrong thing about the network card. She probably doesn't even know what a network card is. But from what I can see... the computer just doesn't recognize the card itself... if it is the network card... what can I do?

try using the nic with a working connection (someone else's broadband connection), or if you have the hardware there, set up a simple 2 computer network with a crossover cable and see if it works. If that doesn't work, the nic is either busted or not installed (drivers) correctly.

If the computer can't recognize the card, the connection isn't going to work.

[edit #2]you said SHE,

first rule of tech club: don't mention tech club
second rule of tech club: when a girl has computer problems, you have to be the man and go fix it for her. she, in return, owes either sex, or an ice cold coca-cola. generally the latter

The computer will not recognize the nic until the drivers are installed. It may not be a plug and pray nic. This puter needs a tech or a bench to check it out. Not enough information.

Also, if your friend knows squat about computers, she might of forgot to ground herself before picking up the NIC.
