Got a Phenom rig for "free"!

My current rig is a:

AMD X2 939, 2.4 Ghz
3 GB DDR400
DFI Infinity NF4
Radeon 4670

And while it's slow, it does what I need nicely. Sort of.
It can play games with decent-ish graphics at 1680x1050, even some newer ones.

Now, I fix and setup guitars for a living.

And I recently did a big job for a music producer, who decided to throw his old recording computer as an extra on the payment.
Specs on my signature!

:D

I'll get it on Tuesday.

I know it's outdated, but I'm just a casual gamer and I know I'll be more than happy with it, plus the mobo supports Phenom II chips!

I'm happy.

Not bad at all for a free set up

Hell yeah.
Take it up to 8 GB, slap a X4 965 on it, a nice overclock and I'll be set for quite a few years. :)

I'll keep the 9950 for a while though. I know they've got the worst possible reputation, but I think it'll be enough for me,
and I'll probably even buy a faster video card first.

Just a recommendation: don't get a 965. It does not OC better than the 955 or 945 and costs more.

As for getting a new graphics card, remember that something like a Radeon HD 6850 or so will start to bottleneck a 9950.

Congrats on your free build, BTW. Should make a great secondary system.

Thanks man. No worries, I'll probably get a 955 or something.

That's gonna be in a while though. I will, however, max the RAM ASAP, before the DDR2 prices get inflated.
And regarding video, well I'm a sucker for some nice AA so I'll always find a way to make use of video card horsepower...
I had a 8800GTX at one point in my X2 and it didn't perform much faster than my current 4670, but I could boost details and filters without any performance loss so it's all good. :D

Sounds good.

Do get more RAM quickly. Before DDR2 RAM was at $40 and now it's at $50.

If you've been satisfied with your current Phenom X4 9950, you should be set for some years with a Phenom II X4 955. It's around 25% faster in gaming both stock, and given average OCs for the 955 are 4-4.2GHz and for the 9950 3GHz that should jump to 30-35%.

If I were you I would sell that S939 while it is still worth something on Ebay.

A year ago a old 4800+ alone can fetch money for an Athlon II + mobo + 2GB DDR3.

I'd love to, but I'd rather pass it to my mother, she's still using a Pentium III!
That's just cruelty.

I've seen impressive prices on used 939 chips / DDR sticks in the USA, but I'm from Chile and for some reason they ain't worth **** in the used market here.

My advice would actually be: "Don't fix guitars for a living in a tiny third world country where manual labor is horribly underpaid".

I'm a journalist too. Don't worry, the income's more than fine. :)
Upgrading my desktop is just way down on my priority list.
