Situation:

Got an ATI X1950 Pro PCI-e video card last Christmas as a present.....was a good upgrade for me as I had been using an X800 Pro until then.

Well, yesterday, my wife shows up with another X1950 Pro in her possession.....a gift for me. I'd sort of talked to her about CrossFire with the X1950 Pro, but was just in the "wishful thinking" category of talking.

Well, now I have a pair of them and can actually do the CrossFire config. if I want to.

The question is.....is it worth doing or better to get rid of the two cards, one brand new and one 6 months old, and convert those into something like an 8800 GTS?

iirc you need a crossfire master card for crossfire on the x19xx series cards. Also, you need the dongle. sadly, I have the master card and an x1950xt but no dongle...

even if you could run xfire on that setup, it would be nothing like an 8800gts or hd2900xt.

Ummm.......no, the X1950 Pro series was the first ATI series that used the internal connector for CrossFire, much like the SLI setups use. So, no master card needed, no dongle.....just two identical cards and the bridges.

I would put them in crossfire for now and wait until the new GPU's come out in November. I always wait at least 2 generations to upgrade (unless a card dies). I doubt the jump from xfire X1950 Pros to a single 8800 would really be that extreme. The jump to a 9800 or something might be more worthwhile.

Mind as well. Something about dual GPU setups make me drool just by the thought of it

Must be a geek thing.

Extra performance for no money doesn't happen everyday.
