I currently work at a certain state taxation agency (you can figure it out), hunting down child support deadbeats and trying to convince them to start paying. Sad to say, but I'm glad that I have the power to levy and garnish, or else I wouldn't have their attention. Anyway, I went in for an interview as an auditor at the Dept of Parks and Rec last week and was offered the job yesterday.

The pay is the same, but promotions are much faster at this route. Also, I can work on my CPA license while being there and travel to different locales. Downsides are that the commute is 20 mins longer each way and will have to be done via train. Another downside is that I have to start dressing up (no more tshirt and jeans) and lose my 10hr days/4days a week schedule. Other that that, yay!! :)

I did, and got discharged after a month in boot camp for developing asthma. A lot of people had respiratory problems while being there due to the dirt and stress.

Congrats

Are state jobs as much of a pain in the butt to apply for as government ones? Probably not.

Liar

Well its pretty difficult to be fired. My dad currently works for the government, and if they fire him they have to give him a NINE MONTH NOTICE before they can toss him...which leaves ample time. The only problem is the rate (well for an engineer anyways) isn't as high as the private sector rate but right now staying stable in a slightly bumpy economy is more important.

That isn't true. It may be true for layoffs based upon the size of the company. Also, you telling us about your daddy doesn't mean squat. I am a state employee and I may have a better handle on it than you.
Then again, maybe not.

My opinion is that getting fired for illegal actions is pretty quick if you're caught. There recently was a guy who got fired and convicted due to cashing taxpayer's checks into his own personal accounts.

Hunting down deadbeats is fun for the first few months, but the work gets monotonous and repetitious. You keep hearing the same old sob story. With the program moving to the Dept of Child Support Services (DCSS), there will be more openings soon in the Tax Tech and Compliance Rep level.
