Got a new pair of glasses

While they work well for close-proximity, and I mean very close (1 foot max), they give an unexplainable discomfort for longer range. Everything is sharper at longer range, but the eyes hurt and headaches follow.

I did say I wanted them for working on the computer, not for walking outside, but I did not intend to have the monitor right in front of my nose.

Interestingly enough if I close one eye, the other seems to have no problem, but when both are open the problem shows.

Does anyone have an idea what the reason for this could be? Do I need 'distance' glasses, what is the difference between the two?

The prescription is -1 diopter for both and -0.5 astigmatism for the right eye.

If they're giving you headaches, there's two things I can come up with:

1. You got the wrong prescription. Either mis-diagnosed or they put the wrong glass in.
2. Your eyes may still be adjusting or rejecting the corrections that are trying to be put in place. (astigmatism)

If you still get headaches after 2 or 3 days, go back and try a new prescription.

I had the same problem with one of those $20 eyeglasses that I got online. The vision was *really* weird for the first few days, but eventually I got used to it, or my brain did :)

But like commander Bond said, if it's still this bad after 3 days, get some things checked out.

Heh, not made of money :)

I'll just try and ride it out, but I'm concerned about 'adjusting' my eyes to the glasses rather than having the glasses adjusted to my eyes, particularly when I will be wearing them less often than not.

Yep, usually when I get new glasses my brain takes a couple days to adjust to the prescription (which is probably stronger than it should be). Once again, to reiterate, if your eyes do not adjust after 3 days, get something checked out.

Made of money or not, they should offer a hefty discount or give you the new/corrected prescription for free! Dude, we're talking about your EYES here, not which pair of shoes you like more. You only have one set for your life so make damn sure everything is kosher!!!

I'm pretty sure the prescription is correct, I'm not so sure whether the glasses were made precisely according to the prescription. As for having one set for life, I actually see myself getting them replaced a couple decades from now. Maybe I'll even get UV and Infrared vision :)

This is very important. When I got my last pair of glasses the person at the counter messed up the adjustment so that the lens weren't parallel to each other, one aimed slightly down, relative to the other - instant headaches. Went back and had them readjusted and no more headaches.

Nah, just examining the natural progression of technology :)

Maybe these glasses are a 'sign' that I shouldn't be wearing glasses. I'll check out that readjustment suggestion, thanks.

It usually takes 2~3 days to get adjusted to new glasses wearing them for short periods at a time, but if it doesn't look right after that then they should fix it for free.
