Took out my old h/d with Win98,put a new h/d in ,installed Win Xp.I need some email addresses from my old one,I could just swap em and get what I need, but I'd rather just hook it up and copy the stuff from one to the other. As it is right now I have the h/d as master and my cdrw as slave on the primary ide.Can I just plug my old harddrive into the second ide port?Do I set it to slave or master?Any advice appreciated.Thanks.

old hd--->Secondary IDE as master. computer will boot into XP only since the boot file has not be changed.

recommended: if you are only running one hd and one cd-rom/rw, have hd on primary ide as master and cd-rom on secondary ide as master. this will give you faster and better performance as there is a ide controller to control each device rather than one controller controlling two devices.

Ok thanks.I did at one time have it that way,but I took out my cd-rom and mean't to put the cdrw on it,never did.I'm glad I can put that old h/d on the 2nd ide as master,it will save me some work.I'd leave it in there but my p/s is only 200 watts (its a very good one) but it won't last forever, it came with my p-133.Thanks.

WinXP drive as Master on Primary IDE..old drive as Slave(check jumper positioning as well) to XP...you can peruse the old drive to your hearts content(XP can see and work with FAT32 ..FAT32 has a problem with NTFS..WinXP's default file system/format..)...are you really running XP on a p133...? <edit and once done with it move it to the Secondary IDE as Master with the cdrw as Slave to it. ...p133...walks away mumbling anda wondering..😉

I don't believe you really want to ghost the old drive onto the new one.
There are a couple of ways to get your old email files.
One is to search for .dbx files on the old hard drive if you don't already know where they are stored.
Alternatively, assuming you are using Outlook Express, you can open that up in XP and "import" the old email files, again assuming you already know where they are and if they were on an updated version of Outlook Express.
