The Camry is no more. It was great to me but I thought it was time to retire the 14 year old workhorse.

Got a 2012 GTI. Black, 4 doors. I got the technology or "convenience" package and it came with a sunroof, which is cool. I got the DSG model since they didn't have a manual that wasn't a '13, which despite being a cheaper option, I would have lost out on a lot of discounts and not been able to haggle down as much. I would have probably had to pay a lot more, which I didn't want to do. They gave me $3,000 for the Camry too, which for a 1999 I felt was good. They drove it around and inspected it, they were perfectly aware of its foibles.

All in all I feel I did well. I've done really well for myself the past year and since it was a pretty conservative purchase (in terms of monthly payments) I feel like I did well. I can afford it, I won't break the bank, etc.

Anyway, here she is!

TL;DR: Got a new car, it is a blast to drive! Yay!

Edit: Updated pics! Got her tinted and decided to wash her today. New pics. :)

My wife had a Golf once. Worst car we've ever owned.
Elaborate? :-\

Everything I've read, all the forums for this car and my co-workers who've all had MK6's which are almost identical to mine, all say that this car doesn't have any major failures or minor ones for that matter. Drive train holds up well, fit and finish are great, no problems, etc. The design has been around for a long time, engine has been too. Where is the fault?

Where to start... it was difficult to work on, even an oil change was a huge PITA. The car was dog slow, transmission failed 3 times in first 5 years, headliner was falling out of it after only a couple years, the sunroof rattled... that's just off the top of my head. I hated that car.

Best of luck with yours though.

Normal Golf or GTI? As I understand it, big differences. I don't feel this is slow at all, oil change looks simple enough. We'll see.

I am not in love with them but I don't mind them. The only visual upgrades/modifications I will be doing to the exterior is wheels. Once these less than wonderful pirelli all seasons have worn away I'll be doing both, unless I find a deal before then on wheels. I know these wheels have a high resale value among the GTI crowd so I'll be able to get rid of them eventually, not too worried about it now.

I love this car. Great choice, it may very well be my next car. I currently drive a Mazda 3 hatch

The Golfs are bipolar. Either you got a problem free one or you swore Murphy built it.

my friend's 2006 Rabbit (Golf) has very comfortable / sporty suspension
AC broke this year he hasn't fixed it
aside from that I really like it and would consider it for next car

Lots of VW haters left over from the 90's on here. Ignore them. Car looks good. The TSI is more reliable than the older FSI and they've worked out a lot of the other bugs. Maintenance is included for three years so he's got awhile before he has to change the oil himself.

Did they try to low ball you on your trade saying that it's worth $500? Did you have to haggle with them?

Also, did you buy the car @ MSRP?

love the GTi; do not love the premium gas. nice car!!
Yeah, I'm not excited by it. It costs me around $3 more to fill up vs regular. Though, I'm getting 6 more MPGs right now compared to my Camry and I've been lead footing around. I'll hopefully get it up higher.

Had an 03 golf. Loved it. Hated that the window motor broke twice, interior parts broke off without rough use, headlights kept burning out every six months, transmission would lock in cold weather forcing me to sit there for 30 minutes every morning just to get it to get into drive, and other nagging issues in the first five years of ownership. Finally gave up the car when the engine died from sludge. This is after religious oil changes with synthetic. My mechanic said engines from this era were prone to sludging and there was nothing I could do short of putting a new motor in it. Loved the car but hated it. It reminded me of a crazy artsy chick in college who was a good lay but would probably stab me to death in my sleep if I got married.

Nothing wrong with that Golf. Mk3's and Mk4's (<99 and >99 respectively) had more problems despite being more technically simple.

Hopefully they've gotten the bugs worked out of the DSG. I heard early complaints on the GTI's, but I think they rectified it within a MY or two. Would always prefer a real manual, though. And I'd blindly bet on a good automatic being more reliable (...there were some kinda pretty bad VW autos, though...), but who knows.

I also wish it had some different wheels. I remember those as like the Mk5 GTI 'launch' wheels, and was not a fan. I've seen some more preferable (imo) options on the lots, but that might be custom order.

absolutely love your car atty! I actually really like the dsg. How has your first few commutes felt compared to the old camry?

At least merging on the freeway is more fun now!

Neuspeed intake makes those growl under WOT very nicely.
