I was trying to update the firmware of my DVD-ROM and CD burner (NEC 12x DVD & NEC 12X10X32)...before the update...only the DVD-ROM can play audio CD...the burner would play too...but no sound coming out of it. Now, after the update, both drives can play audio CD with sound, but while playing in the burner the HD would flash with the burner...WHY? I have my DVD as slave and CD burner as master now...I change the jumper setting on the back of the drives to try different setting....but nothing solve the problem...please give me a hand.

Yeah...the HD and CD-burner flash at exactly the same time together.....Should I run the power cord from CD-Burner to Floppy drive or from HD to floppy drive? That might be the problem~

by the way..what's the diffference between firmware and driver? I never really understand the difference.

firmware is updating the drive, its within the drive.. if you get another operating system you still have the same firmware. a driver updates the way the operating sees the drive.. if you get another operating system you need to install the driver again (different driver if its a different os for the most part)

Thanks for clearing it up. BTW...do you have any clue about my problem? :D
It's not a big problem..I could still use DVD drive for CD audio....but just wondering why CD-Burner and HD would act this way.

Almost sounds like the burner is playing the audio digitally... that is, your CD burner is reading the audio from the CD and sending it through the hard drive (?) before going to the sound card, rather than having an audio cable going from the burner to your sound card. Without knowing how your system is set up, I'd be willing to say that your DVD-ROM has the audio cable going from the drive to your sound card, while your CD burner does not. The firmware update may have allowed the CD burner to play audio digitally from the drive, which is why it works now, but didn't work before. It may seem odd, but it's not really a problem. Now if trying to play an audio CD in your burner, say, caused your system to crash, then there'd be something to worry about.

You are absolutely right! Man! You are a genius! I just check my setting...Yeah, a cable line runs from sound card to DVD drive but not CD-burner. And yes, I have both drive enable to do audio digitally.....should I enable this? Any difference I may notice? Also, I set DVD drive to master and CD burner to slave...would the system ggives the master drive a priority...or better performance?

My recommendation is that if it's working fine for you (you can play audio CDs fine and other CDs work as they should) then there's really no reason to change the way it's set up. As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)
