You could try planting that creeping fescue. It doesn't have to be mowed, it just kind of swirls around and has sort of a nice low meadow look.

I planted some on one of my many horribly steep nightmare to mow areas. It sort of works, except some weeds grow up that get tall anyway which ruins the purpose. On a regular lawn that just gets mowed down so it kind of doesn't matter. If I have to weed the lawn then I just traded annoying mowing for backbreaking even more annoying weeding so I kind of consider the experiment a failure.

My lawn is awful, hilly and lumpy. The part by the septic tank needs to be mowed every 3-4 hours and the part further up the hill turns into a dustbowl by august. A good 50% is so steep that a riding mower would have a very real risk of rolling over, and with a push mower I often fall down while mowing due to the steep angle and slight slipperiness of the grass. I'd plant trees or rocks or something there but its my leech field so I can't.

I hate spending money on it because I don't really care as long as it doesn't turn into a cow field but I think since we're doing a little better this year I'm going to bring some clean fill in and fix some holes and try to even out some of the slopes a little. I'd like to put some terraces in or rock gardens to reduce the work but those are pretty major projects.

I've seriously considered getting goats just to mow the lawn.

Because a bunch of nosy peckerwoods want to be in other peoples business. They want to dictate how we live on every level. This is just another intrusion.

Local historic society threatened me with $400 fine or 30 days in jail because I put up a picket fence without their permission. F*ck them. TBH, I did tell one of their commissioners that she could shove her permit up her a**.

This

don't like how my property looks? move.

Unless of course you knowingly moved into a place with a strict HOA.

You can bet I didn't. Our uppity rich folk decided my hood was historic and had it designated so after we bought. My house is just old, not historic.

Well unfortunately in a society you are simply wrong on that. HOA's came to be because getting the city/town to react is a much slower process and you also 'self-tax' to get some niceities like gates, pools, landscaping.

In reality if you want to live the way you feel you should, head out to acreage and wall yourself inside.

Everyone should just use artificial grass like they do in Arizona. No need for periodic maintenance.

Many cities have ordinances requiring grass to be maintained below a certain height. In my city it's 12" , they will send you one warning and if don't respond they will dispatch a city crew to mow your yard for you and send you a $300 fine.
What if the house(or property) is in foreclosure or completely abandoned?

i need to grow some non weedy ground cover in my forest. Under the tree canopy, the grass doesnt grow, and its just poison ivy, thorn buses and little baby trees from the acorns and seeds that are dropped.

put down weed block fabric and/or small rocks/mulch/etc.

Keep all the sun away and weeds don't grow.

Besides the few dandelions that I've gotten rid of already there really are no weeds on my front lawn. I did let the small amount of grass that isn't dead yet grow a bit high because I didn't have a lawn mower. That's probably why I got the notice. My lawn has been cut for almost 2 weeks now and although it needs some patching in the dead areas I don't think they'll continue to have a problem on the next visit.

I hope that you are not the one that is living 1km away from my house...

It certainly does seem like that would be more efficient in the long run.
Wonder what the payback time is for something like that.
Maintenance of artificial lawn (occasional, replacing wear and tear) versus equipment, storage space for equipment, gasoline, and time spent(wasted) mowing obsessively.

I'd love to get a replica of one of the Mars Rovers, give its programming an overhaul, give it GPS capability, and equip it with a mower deck.
Step 1: Take it on a walk around the perimeter of your yard, so that it can learn its borders.
Step 2: Now you've got a solar powered mower with object avoidance capability, and turn-in-place capability. It can take care of the lawn, while you can do something more productive than mowing, like watch cheese age.:)
