Many cities have ordinances requiring grass to be maintained below a certain height. In my city it's 12" , they will send you one warning and if don't respond they will dispatch a city crew to mow your yard for you and send you a $300 fine.
Even us southern rednecks have that.
LOL,

He has reported me multiple times for putting my yard waste on the street too early. Our trash collection is on Wednesdays, and we are not supposed to put yard waste out until 24 hours of collection. lawn clippings and leaves out on Sunday before, but at least I mow my yard :).
We've got that too but it's not enforced. Mine goes out on Saturdays. The aftermath of their threats about my picket fence has made them leery, I think.

This thread makes me love my neighborhood/village. Everyone's lawn is nice, yet if you let it go for a while people just assume you are away for vacation, no one turns you in or fines you.

Yep. This ordinance includes weeds, rubbish or piles of dirt. The type of grass I have grows this long stem with seeds at the top. Gets almost knee high.

Yep, thats coastal bermuda! Grows natively throughout most of the south, thats also what grows in my front yard.

Woah, does grass even stand up at 1ft?
It can. It may droop a bit, especially once it forms the seedhead, but it'll easily grow over a foot tall. Farmers (at least in my area) will let the grass grow to this stage in ditches next to the fields or their homes then swath them and gather the cut grass into hay bales. The warm months here can generate 2 growing cycles before winter arrives again.

Sure, it'll start to spike, and go to seed. If there weren't so many whiners in the world, that would be an efficient, and ecological way of filling in your yard if it got thin.

I've used that line on my neighbor a couple of times when he's bitched at me because I had seed stalks on my front lawn...he doesn't buy it...and accuses me of being lazy.

I have some of those in the front lawn now...I started to mow over the weekend...got the back yard done before I ran out of gasoline...haven't been out to get more. <shrug>

I fucking hate cutting grass.

My landlord is a dick about it too. Already got some snide comments just yesterday about it.
I have honestly cut it 4 times already this year. Pretty much every time I've had 20 mins of actual sunshine I've been out mowing.

I think it is because I never feel accomplished when I finish. I just look at it like... well see you again at the end of the week. Like Sisyphus and the boulder.

The city sent you this? I thought only HOA can pull this type of shit.

Wow, you aren't the sharpest lad are you.

The city usually has an umbrella policy on yard maintenance...it's usually a lot more lax than most HOA's rules would be.

Here grass can be over 12" prior to citation on the city level, but most HOA's are 6"...also nuisance weeds like Dandelions and the like are grounds for ticketing at any time since your negligence could now cause an outbreak throughout the block.

I fucking hate Bermuda grass. It's an invasive weed around here. (although a well done, properly cared-for Bermuda grass lawn is very nice in the summertime)

Yes, some strains of bermuda are really nice like the Tiff bermuda thats used on golf coarses, but the stuff we call coastal which highland145 more properly labeled "bahia" grows wild hear in Texas because of it's ability to grow with little to no water. It is some nasty stuff and closer to a weed than a grass IMO

It's a waste of time. I'd rather do just about anything than mow grass. It wastes time, resources, and it pollutes the water, especially the way some people care for grass. It's only reason to exist is so poor white trash can feel like 19th century plantation owners :^S

I don't understand this country's obsession with lawns. I don't live on a golf course, I live in the woods.

If you aren't poor white trash you can afford a lawn guy...Mother fucker comes like magic each week.

Also if you don't like grass, spend some cash on alternative landscaping...

Actually, I'd argue that most people live beyond their means and can not afford a lawn guy.

Most of us probably need our fat asses out mowing our own lawns instead of supporting the illegals.

Why do you need to hire an illegal? There are plenty of born and raised in the USA lawn companies. They usually are a bit more pricey, but they do a better job.

You're right. I was just being pissy. I mow my own grass and my Mom's. 2 hrs with a push mower means no gym on Saturday.

Solution: landscaping.

Rip out every last bit of sod in the front yard. Find a nice selection of perennials to replace it with, some shrubs, etc. Make sure that the perennials along the property line are very fast growing and spreading types. Many of that type look beautiful, but once established, they're an absolute pain in the ass to eradicate. Your neighbor who whined - it's his problem if his grass is inferior to your flowers and loses the battle. :D

edit; ohhhh, I know! Bamboo can look quite charming and makes a nice privacy hedge. :p :p
Our neighbors when I was a kid had a small patch. 20 years later, my mother gave up the fight of getting rid of the stuff.

I have never mowed my lawn. I don't see that I should. Requiring people to do something about NATURE seems pretty stupid to me. I feel bad though, my parents bought me a lawnmower that I have yet to use.

Thanks. Was trying to ID what kind of grass I had so I can find seeds to patch up the dead and bare spots. I have a feeling this grass is going to be more of a pain that what it's worth cause the seed stems grow like weed though.

If by "lawn guy" you mean random dude that knocks on door, and by "afford" you mean 10 bucks... I can afford a lawn guy.

I hate that crap. I mow and 3 days later, it's 2" above my centipede. 3 days after that it's 10". We'll have drought like conditions and a bird will fly over and think about taking a piss and this crap explodes. Paid ~$100 last year to have it killed. I'm sure it'll be back.

If it's sucking all the nutrients out of the soil with it's rapid growth, my turf grass can't do well, imo.

Edit: It will cover your yard but not "fill in."
