Hey everyone, just got a letter for jury duty. Kind of nervous since it is a bit surprising. I went last time around 2006 or so.

Have you guys actually been selected?

I was selected for a Burglary / Possession of stolen property case.

I actually thought it was very cool. Seeing how the system works and watching the lawyers present their cases...

Interesting stuff.

(We found him not guilty...the prosecution was reaching...)

Heh, grand jury. 1 day/month...1 year. If I'm real lucky, 2 years.

But we don't see any lawyers or defendants. Just detectives with the case info...enough evidence to proceed...Y/N. Duh, there's no defense.

Upside, it's ~100 yards from my office.

Edit: When the news says someone was indited by the grand jury...it doesn't mean jack, imo.

Well I am self employed so if I am selected, it would hurt me a bit. That means if the trial is longer than 1 or 2 days, I'll be in trouble. Oh well, I'll just go and see what happens.

Explain that you have a heroin addiction and can't last through the selection process let alone a trial w/o a fix.

I just served after being ineligible for 20 years. Felons can't serve. Enough time passed and they called me up. I read a book for about 7 hours.

There were 1200 other people also called. They called the first 300 or so and the rest of us were dismissed at about 4pm.

My last one was in January this year. Went, sat in the jury room for 4 hours, never even left the room to go through voir dire, the court wrapped up for the day and we all went home. I've gotten a summons letter at least a dozen times, only had to show up on my assigned day three times, only went through voir dire once, got selected and then the case hit a snafu and they needed to postpone, so we didn't have to serve. As a result after all those summonses I've never sat on a single jury.

I got the letter twice but haven't been required to go in once. I'm actually quite curious of the entire experience.

I can see it being pretty painful to have jury duty if you're going to lose your normal pay. Last time my Dad had jury duty, it cost him about $5000.

Read up on jury nullification.

And yes, I served on a jury.

Called twice served once. Sat on a civil trial for two months. Some folks suing Ford over the Explorer rollovers and seatbelts. Ford won. My employer has a great jury duty policy, you get full pay and get to keep your jury duty money.

I've been called at least 6 times, served once.

It was a criminal trial for assault, theft and possession of stolen property. We found him guilty on all but one of the counts. It was an interesting process, as it was nothing like trials are on TV. lol

The last time I had to call every night every night for two weeks to see if I needed to report the following day. I made it both weeks without having to serve.

Served on a jury for a trial that went 4+ months 30 years ago. They told me they'd take me off the list for a long time and they've been true to their word so far.

Had the same happen when I'd been open a month. Called and begged but I knew the judge. I'm in a better position now so the year is acceptable. 2 are acceptable but will suck.

Haven't been called yet. I'm ready to say that I hate people of every culture including my own.

I was selected whilst still on deployment. Had to get a letter from my CO saying "fuck off".

Amazingly, that was like 15 years ago. Am surprised I havent been pulled again.

Been summoned four times, couldn't go on the first three since I was in school across the state. Last one was for a medical malpractice case. Didn't even do voir dire, they selected their jury after getting through maybe half out of the group of 40-50. I wouldn't have minded at all being selected since I wasn't employed at the time.

It's interesting the way it works differently in different places. I got federal JD once and that was a 3 month stint. But rather than every night they schedule people to appear the first Monday or Tuesday. You call in the night before and if you don't have to appear they send you a brand new summons for a couple of weeks later. Again, you call the night before and if you don't have to go they send you a another new summons for a couple of weeks later. With the lag time between mailings and allowing us a buffer to schedule our days over the 3 month period the most times they can hook you is 3 or 4 tops. I got 4 completely different summonses for that three month period and never had to go to court once. But it was a real bitch anyway because I had to schedule around all those days I *could* have been on.

On the letter it says "Juror Number: 83"

Not sure the significance of that.

You're going to get taken the very first call. "Jurors 1 thru 100 report to Courtroom 6". I was in the 900's. They didn't make it past 300 or maybe 500. It was pretty low.

I served last year. It was a very interesting experience. I was chosen for a murder trial that involved two defendants with two separate juries. Both defendants were found guilty in the end. It was a lot harder to convict someone when you have someone's life in your hands, that's for sure.
