Got a job offer - when is it appropriate to first contact the boss?

So all the interviewing paid off and I just got an offer letter a couple days ago. They're still performing the background check on me but have finished calling references, etc. When would be the appropriate time to first contact my future boss?

I've already sent him a thank you e-mail the day after my interview with him (which was about a week ago), but he hasn't responded back yet. I'd like to get his input on what textbooks/documents I should be familar with before starting work the first day. Also, I haven't signed any NDA contracts or anything like that yet, just the offer letter accepting the position.

Thanks all

I wouldn't contact them (the manager) back other than the thank you letter. You'll have plenty of time to a$$kiss once you're in the job.

I'm really not trying to asskiss, the job asked for alot of qualifications I don't have, so I want to come in as prepared as possible. They're paying me to make contributions, I'm not about to go in the first day and sit on my ass all day reading training references. If they DO have me do that I atleast want to minimize that time.

The first day or two is always a waste of time. No matter how hard you try. I would just save it until you arrive. What type of position?

you have the rest of your life to learn just enjoy your time off

I contact my hiring manager when I have questions about the job. Why would it be wrong to ask them questions you have?

I do not talk to my manager until the first day of the job. To be truthful, there no way you can really prepare becaus elots of the stuff you will use is used internally only. your best bet would be just to review what you already know.

if you talk ask your manager and he does respond, he will likely say something like, "famailrize yourself with the ARM architecture". It's not very useful, but its all he can tell you.

Nobody expects you to contribute on day one. You haven't even taken the training wheels off and yo think you can ride on two wheels. Besides , this is an opportunity to begin learning how to slack off. Goof off until you have to go to work, then find out the details like everyone else.

yeah, I re-read the OP.

get your ears wet some. Then you'll learn not to sign anything. ever.

If you've already accepted there is no turning back/no negotiation. show up for work with a smile on your face and a go-getter attitude and you'll be fine. arse kissing/working the politics comes later.

My first two months was spent goofing around while I learn the ropes. Yup, take it easy. You'll have your entire career to learn and work the system. Ahhh, the job noobies - it's been a long time for me.
