Got a GPU for cheap, but I've got some questions about it.

Hey everyone, I got a PNY nVidia 9600GT for pretty cheap today from a friend. He never used it, but I'm aware it's outdated. Looking at benchmarks and things, it seems to perform pretty decent for what it is, but what I'm wondering is about that whole G92/G94 "GPU issue" that was going on about a year or two ago.

Was it ever proved/proven false that the G92/G94 cores were effected just like the G8X cores? Also, is it different between desktop/laptop GPUs? And finally, is there any driver fixes available for stuff like this? Thanks for any info guys...I've searched on google a lot but it all points back to the same typical stuff (Inquirer article, etc.)

EDIT: Another question for anyone who might be looking, what's the whole "black screen of death" thing that is going around about the 9600GT? Is that related to the "supposed defect" or is that something completely different, such as a driver issue, etc?

I haven't heard of a "Black screen of death", but I have a friend with a 9600GT, hasn't had anything like that happen to him before.
Maybe someone else can comment on that.

The 9600 GT is a great card for a Entry-Mid Level rig. I have mine in my low Power rig a BE2350 Athlon X2 and it plays SC2 Beta great at 1080.

I think the Black Screen issues were heat related. Don't worry about it until you experience it for yourself. Just keep the dust bunnies out of the heatsink.

I had SLI 9600GTs for about two months. They did overheat like crazy once overclocked.

It's a very good card, I had one that I gave to my brother, he's now happily playing BFBC2 at medium-ish but good looking settings at 1680x1050 on an Phenom X4 945.

I'm not too much of a PC gamer, but from what I hear this GPU can definitely handle SC2, which is about the only PC game I play other than WC3:TFT.
