DDR is not future proof.

I've always thought about this, but then again, what if this upgrade was what prevented me from upgrading in the near future? let's say I build an AM2 system, building up everything again, then what, it's 3 years down the road, do I upgrade or build another stupid system again? Wouldn't it make more sense to do an upgrade that will make what I have now more useful?
I mean 1GB of ram is a decent amount, excess back when I bought it but now I'm looking for better performance and more ram capacity, is that such a bad idea? Seems like i'd be an endless cycle if I always thought "this could be put towards a new system".
