i recently got a brand new free iphone (1st gen) from a friend. she basically wanted me to unlock it and use it like an itouch, a mini entertainment system but with a camera.

after connecting the iphone to itunes, i restored the iphone to the latest firmware, 2.1. i proceeded to use quickpwn to unlock it and sofar everything works great. wifi works, installed apps via cydia and installer.

when i reconnect the iphone to itune i get a message that says this unit can't be used with itunes because it's not activated. is there a way to bypass this? i wanted to upload movies onto the phone.

i'm not planning on using this as a phone, i'm currently with verizon and pretty happy with them. but i don't want this unit to go to waste.

can anybody give me some insight?

edit: apparently you can't bypass activation of firmware 2.1 yet, you need to downgrade to 2.02 the repwn the unit.

i'll just wait for a 2.1 deactivation program to come but will post results when it does in case someone else needs the info

My first thought is to ebay it and get an Ipod Touch. Granted you would lose the camera but it is not exactly high quality, probably not much better than what you already have on your cell phone.

Isn't there an option in Quickpwn to bypass activation? I would try pwning the iPhone again and make sure that activate is checked.

promised my friend not to sell the unit so that's out of the question. if it doesn't work i'll just return it to her.

Strange. I'm using my old 4gb iPhone as my mp3 player and I have no problem connecting to iTunes. I'm also running 2.1. I vaguely remember being able to bypass the activation but maybe they removed that option in the newer versions.

Does it have a SIM in it? If not, try borrowing one from someone and trying again.

I remember getting an error like this when I was messing with my phone and it turned out that I'd forgotten to put the SIM back in.

Theres an option to bypass the activation. It was under advanced the last time I did an iphone which was on 2.0
